Water Management and Public Participation

Water Management and Public Participation PDF Author: Alka Upadhyay
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400757093
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 163

Book Description
Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is an approach that promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, in order to maximize economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems. Without public interest and participation, successful implementation of IWRM plans for river basin cannot be possible. Further to this, management at the watershed level to assure water supplies to support livelihood (i.e. domestic water, irrigation, industries, etc.) and sustainable groundwater development requires water augmentation through water conservation structures, and pollution control will also play a vital role. In India, because of limited period of rainfall during Monsoon (i.e. three to four months), water conservation and rainwater harvesting have been practiced since ancient days in order to meet water demands throughout the year. These structures are generally constructed and operated through the public participation. Keeping in view of the importance of public partnership, the role of public partnership in context of water-related awareness and practices has been investigated in different parts of the Yamuna River basin. The investigation evaluates the impact of various water conservation devices on livelihood; compares the performance of recently developed water conservation structures with ancient structures; examines spatial variation of water-related problems in the basin; and proposes an institutional setup for effective governance.

Pages : 236

Book Description
The developments in science pave way to the betterment of mankind. A field of research develops only when it copes with advancements. This book aims to bring together and document the recent developments in the field of water research. It is an agglomeration of different aspects of water research and recent developments covering surface water, rain water and ground water. Several multidisciplinary papers covering geophysical applications, hydrogeochemical aspects, isotopic signature, speciation of trace elements, etc., were incorporated to give an insight into the various aspects of water resources. The applications of resistivity survey in identification of sea water intrusion, the chemical nature of water in different environments, their equilibrium conditions, quality, spatial and temporal variations in their quality and quantity are also discussed in detail. This edition is done with a clear and simple style with its main emphasis on present problems from developing world environments highlighting the relevant data with examples representing current status of various water resources. All these features make this book indispensable to the researchers and managers of water resources in most parts of the world.

ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY IN SOUTH WESTERN PART OF VAIPPAR RIVER BASIN

ASSESSMENT OF GROUNDWATER QUALITY IN SOUTH WESTERN PART OF VAIPPAR RIVER BASIN PDF Author: Jeyaseelan A.
Publisher: Independent Author

Book Description
In recent years at global level, much attention has been paid to the chemical composition of groundwater in rural areas because it revealed that there is a possibility of causal link between the geochemical environment and the groundwater quality. The rural areas may also pose major groundwater contamination problems by imigation and subsurface geological formations. The groundwater is used as direct use in rural water supply without proper treatment for drinking and agricultural practices. However, no detailed studies have been carried out in the rural area of Vaippar River Basin of Tamil Nadu, India with respect to drinking and irrigational purposes so far. The present study was carried out to assess groundwater quality of Nichabanadhi-Kalingalar sub-basin of Vaippar River Basin Agriculture is the main occupation of the people in the study area. Both irrigation and drinking water supplies in the study area rely, mostly on groundwater. The area is mostly covered with agricultural land and there may be a causal link between the groundwater contamination and imigational activities. This concern has also been considered for this study. Preliminary field investigation studies were carried out for capturing well inventory data and identifying topography of the study area. All the required thematic maps were prepared using ArcGIS software. The GIS and Remote Sensing techniques have been adopted for the identification of morphological features and analyzing other properties of the study area. The morphometric parameters such as linear, aerial and relief aspects of the sub-basin were determined and computed. The morphometric analysis reveals.

Book Description
The book embodies the groundwater issues and challenges in India focusing its sustainable use. It is a compilation of papers presented by the eminent experts from Government departments, academia, research institutes, NGOs and stakeholders who assembled at Kurukshetra on 21st August, 2015 in the event of Bhujal Manthan or “Churning of Groundwater” organized for the first time by Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, the apex Ministry of Water Resource under Government of India. India, as a country, is the highest groundwater extractor in the world. Its service towards attaining the food and clean drinking water security is well documented. This volume addresses the issues of aquifer characterization, groundwater contamination, groundwater resource availability and its sustainable management through community participation in pan-India scenario. This book provides a unique opportunity for its readers to understand groundwater domain in India in its entire gamut. The papers included in the volume were selected carefully from the presentations made in the following four broad topics during the Manthan; (i) groundwater quality, (ii) conjunctive use of surface and groundwater, (iii) management intervention and sustainable use of this resource, and (iv) groundwater problems and application of various techniques. The book contains 20 papers including an introductory chapter by the editors. The content of the book is enriched by contributions from eminent researchers and activists in groundwater domain, like Prof. Tushar Shah, Prof. Himanshu Kulkarni, Dr. D. K.
