Book Description
This research assessed membrane integrity monitoring methods for microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membrane filtration processes. The project evaluated existing and newly developed methods for integrity monitoring using literature review and full-scale testing of the essential criteria of sensitivity, continuity, identifiably, reliability, and implementability. Recommendations are included. While this research was motivated by the USEPA's LT2ESWTR, the coverage and results have international applicability.

Membrane integrity is in an interesting combination of science, engineering, and regulations. The book introduces the reader to the subject in the context of drinking water filtration. Both theoretical and practical aspects of membrane integrity testing are discussed along with historical and future technologies. Discussed are the types and causes of integrity breaches, tests to perform to discover them, how to establish a membrane integrity testing program and government disinfection regulations.

Water Treatment Process Monitoring and Evaluation

Water Treatment Process Monitoring and Evaluation PDF Author: Richard P. Beverly
Publisher: American Water Works Association
ISBN: 1583218580
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
This book provides information and tools to assist operators in evaluating treatment plant operational changes (such as the changes in treatment efficiency due to changes in the raw water). and to help operators make corresponding water chemistry or other process changes to keep the plant operating properly. Both operators and system managers can use the analysis tools to more easily understand and operate a plant and be able to identify and correct any plant deficiencies.

Microbial Removal and Integrity Monitoring of High-Pressure Membranes

Microbial Removal and Integrity Monitoring of High-Pressure Membranes PDF Author: J. Lozier
Publisher: IWA Publishing
ISBN: 1843398508
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
High-pressure (HP) membranes, reverse osmosis, and nanofiltration are used increasingly to treat brackish and organic laden surface waters as water purveyors are forced to utilize lower quality source waters to meet potable water demands. In addition, reverse osmosis has become an integral part of the advanced reclamation process for the indirect potable reuse of domestic wastewaters. In these applications, HP membranes are expected to serve as a positive barrier to pathogens. To date, integrity methods for full-scale HP membrane systems have been limited to conductivity and total organic carbon monitoring, approaches that can only assess pathogen removals to two logs (99%). The first objective of this research was to determine the integrity of RO and NF membrane systems with respect to viral passage using both particulate (MS2 viruses and fluorescent microspheres) and soluble (Rhodamine WT) surrogates. The second objective was to compare the capability of these surrogates for use in assessing integrity of intact and compromised RO and NF membranes when evaluated in a number of configurations. Development of Predictive Tools for Membrane Ageing

Development of Predictive Tools for Membrane Ageing PDF Author: Pierre LeClech
Publisher: IWA Publishing
ISBN: 1780406258
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 196

Book Description
This study increases our current understanding on the degradation/ageing mechanisms occurring on porous membranes used in the water and wastewater industries. Accelerated membrane degradation was obtained through both static and consecutive ageing protocols on the pilot-scale, and a range of carefully selected characterisation and analytical techniques was used to characterise the nascent changes faced by the membrane material. The report covers four interrelated sections: Critical assessment of characterisation techniques Static accelerated ageing Consecutive accelerated ageing Consecutive ageing of industrially-aged membranes. This final report summarises the aims, objectives, outcomes and limitations of the individual work packages, along with some recommendations for future work. This book is co-published with Water Research Australia.
