Book Description
Many organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides currently used by California walnut growers have been linked to negative environmental or human health impacts, increasing the probability of use restrictions and phase-outs. This thesis assessed the acceptability of alternative reduced-risk strategies by comparing their costs to those of pest management programs currently in use among San Joaquin County walnut growers. Data from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation's legally mandated Pesticide Use Reports database were used to identify current pest management strategies practiced by walnut growers from 2002 to 2004. While many factors other than cost influence growers' pest management choices, the results of this project conclude that alternative strategies can be cost-competitive with conventional approaches, depending on the pest pressure and savings due to reductions in secondary pest outbreaks.

Book Description
Agricultural pesticides have been linked to water quality impairment in California. While lower risk pesticides are available, they are often more expensive, and are thus slow to be adopted by growers. However, even more expensive products can contribute to an economically viable pest management system (PS) if their selectivity enables secondary pests to be biologically controlled by natural enemies, and thus cut grower's costs in secondary pest outbreak control. This dissertation found that while there were strong decreasing trends in overall ground and surface water risk for the entire state from 2000 to 2008 (Ground water: spearman's rho = -0.97, p

ISBN: 9789201100078
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
This report is aimed at private sector involvement in the production phase of sterile insects for use in pest control. It is a guideline or tool to support the development of more specific business plans that will need to be prepared on a case by case basis, taking into account the species to be reared and the location of the facility. It provides the international perspective on a number of issues of importance for a sterile insect production facility. While some of the points raised will be well known by everybody working in the sector and are included to inform potential investors, other findings present new challenges to production facility managers, whether in private industry or government organizations.

Beyond Silent Spring

Beyond Silent Spring PDF Author: H.F. van Emden
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 0412728001
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
More than 32 years ago, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring appeared upon the scene as a landmark of literary achievement which contributed greatly to the foundation of the modern environmental movement. Rachel Carson had designed Silent Spring to shock the public into action against the misuse of chemical pesticides. More than anything else, the book also served as an ecological primer, demonstrating the interrelationship of all things and the dependence of each on a healthy environment for survival. Today, Silent Spring is generally credited with providing impetus to the whole range of anti-pollution laws that came into force in the 1970s. It is also perceived as having played a crucial role in the eventual banning of DDT as well as in the restricted use or total phasing out of the most notorious hard pesticides identified in the book. The vigorous growth of the chemical industry geared to the production of newer and ever more powerful pesticides can be traced to the introduc tion of the organochlorine insecticide DDT in the 1940s. These pesticides were meant not only to control insects but also animal pests, disease and weeds. Initially their development was based on the belief that they would provide a definitive solution to pest and vector problems.
