From the Mountains to the Abyss

From the Mountains to the Abyss PDF Author: Kathleen M. Marsaglia

Book Description
This SEPM/PS-SEPM volume celebrates the life and scientific achievements of Donn S. Gorsline focusing on the California Continental Borderland, a region where Donn worked extensively. The 18 papers in this volume span offshore Borderland basin settings and exposures in onshore, inner Borderland regions affected by tectonic uplift. They touch on aspects of sedimentation in the modern source-to-sink sedimentary systems, encompassing some world-class Miocene to Pleistocene outcrops and the subsurface distribution of submarine fan and hemipelagic facies, as well as the structural evolution of the Borderland basins and their associated magmatic components. The broad topics covered will be of interest to a spectrum of geologists and geophysicists interested in transtensional to transpressional basin settings, the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of southern California, models of deep-marine to coastal depositional systems, as well as regional hydrocarbon exploration. Additionally, the geologic history and structure of the California Continental Borderland are connected with the distribution of modern seafloor life and marine ecosystems. This volume serves as a benchmark of current research in the region with the aim of spurring future exploration and study.

Structural and Stratigraphic Evolution of the Central and Southern Outer California Continental Borderland

Structural and Stratigraphic Evolution of the Central and Southern Outer California Continental Borderland PDF Author: Gregory L. De Hoogh

Book Description
Abstract: Newly-released multichannel seismic reflection data are used to map stratigraphic horizons in the Outer California Continental Borderland. This mapping reveals aspects of the geologic history of the region as it transitioned from a subduction margin to a transform margin. A regional unconformity, representing a paleo-sea-level reference datum, shows evidence for large vertical motions associated with the development of the transform plate boundary, including considerable post-lower-Miocene net subsidence. A down-cutting angular unconformity on the eastern side of the Outer Borderland suggests uplift of that area and subsequent erosion likely due to the oblique rifting of the Outer Borderland from the Peninsular Ranges of Baja California. Pinchout of pre-Miocene forearc basin rocks by this angular unconformity and an inferred change in lower crustal material data are found to define the Outer-Inner Borderland boundary. Data show that most of the current high bathymetric relief in the region is the result of post-lower-Pliocene transpression.

Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences

Submarine Mass Movements and Their Consequences PDF Author: Jacques Locat
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9781402012440
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 568

Book Description
Did you know that the Grand Bank earthquake of 1929 triggered ahuge submarine mass movement which broke submarine cables over adistance of up to 1000 km from its source and generated a tsunamiwhich devastated a small village in Newfoundland killing 27 people? The same happened in Papua New Guinea in 1998 with more than 2000casualties. Submarine mass movements of various sizes and styles areshaping the sea floor and are of concern for many facets of humanactivities both onshore and offshore. These include the development ofnatural resources, energy and communication transport, coastalinfrastructures and communities. This book provides a world-wideperspective of submarine mass movements and their consequences. Thishas been made possible by assembling excellent contributions fromactive researchers, groups, or institutions, thus providing fullcoverage of the many scientific and engineering aspects of this typeof marine and coastal geo-hazard. It covers fundamental as well assite specific studies from many areas including the Atlantic andPacific oceans, inner seas like the Mediterranean Sea, and fjordsusing the most recent technologies from multibeam sonar imagingtechniques, 3D seismic analysis, slope stability analysis, to debrisflow and tsunami modeling."Audience: " This book is of interest to any researcher in thefield of marine and coastal geo-hazards. It will be useful forplanners, scientists and engineers involved in the development ofoffshore and near-shore resources and also to those in charge of themanagement and mitigation of coastal hazards. For graduate students, this book provides an up-to-date vision of the process of submarinemass movements and their consequences from both ascientific and anengineering standpoint, and it includes a unique collection of theexisting literature on marine geo-hazards."CD-Rom included" This volume contains a CD-Rom which in additionto an electronically searchable vers
