Book Description
In recent years the Asian and Pacific region has seen a rapid increase in its trade and tourism that has led to an urgent need to develop interregional and intraregional transport links. In 1992 the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) approved the Asian Land Transport Infrastructure Development project, comprising the Asian Highway (AH) and the Trans-Asian Railway, and the facilitation of land transport. Under ALTID, ESCAP has completed two projects for the formulation of the new AH network and its overall development. The first project reviewed AH routes in 18 countries and a new AH network was formulated and agreed in 1993. The second project studied and reviewed the highway routes in the Asian Republics and the AH routes in the Central Asia subregion. A regional seminar-cum-workshop, "Upgrading of the Asian Highway Routes", was organised in Bangkok in November 1998. This publication is an output of that seminar and is expected to assist in the recognising the importance of AH network development among member states and provide a strategy and guidelines for future actions on upgrading at regional, subregional and national levels.
