Asian Economic Recovery

Asian Economic Recovery PDF Author: Kong Yam Tan
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789971692575
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
The traditional Asian economic model was characterised by the strategy of state-directed, rapid industrial catching-up. The first-growth period for Japan was 1953-73, while that for the NIEs (Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore) was 1966-86. Between 1987 and 1996, prior to the Asian financial crisis, there was indication that Southeast Asia and coastal China had been replicating the same Asian economic model. While showing a considerable degree of success, the developmental model has its shortcomings, and the financial crisis in 1997-98 exposed the flaws in the economic and political structure. However, with IMF financial assistance, steady improvement in the trade balance, rising foreign reserves, and gradual corporate and banking restructuring, economic recovery began to take place in 1999 and 2000.This book is a collection of papers presented at the Conference on ?Asia in Economic Recovery: Policy Options for Growth and Stability?, organised by the Institute of Policy Studies, Singapore, in June 1999. It discusses the issues and policy options regarding Asia's economic recovery.

Book Description
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has seen governments across developing Asia move significant amounts of capital into relief efforts that have saved countless lives and livelihoods. But emerging economic recovery packages must not upset the sensitive balance between economic growth and the region’s natural capital. Many global thinkers are advocating the critical role of green infrastructure in supporting economic growth and livelihoods, while safeguarding the Paris Agreement targets. This publication examines green and innovative finance mechanisms that can be incorporated into government recovery strategies to incentivize green infrastructure investment. These mechanisms can play a key role in catalyzing much-needed funds from private capital for a green and sustainable regional recovery.

ISBN: 1526137682
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 409

Book Description
This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. The Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 shook the foundations of the global economy and what began as a localised currency crisis soon engulfed the entire Asian region. What went wrong and how did the Asian economies long considered 'miracles' respond? How did the United States, Japan and other G-7 countries respond to the crisis? What role did the IMF play?. Why did China, which suffers many of the same structural problems responsible for the crisis remain conspicuously insulated from the turmoil raging in its midst?. What explains the remarkable recovery now underway in Asia? In what fundamental ways did the Asian crisis serve as a catalyst to the current thinking about the "new international financial architecture"?. This book provides answers to all the above questions and more, and gives a comprehensive account of how the international economic order operates, examines its strengths and weaknesses, and what needs to be done to fix it.

Tigers' Roar

Tigers' Roar PDF Author: Julian Weiss

ISBN: 1315291398
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 351

Book Description
Despite Asia's protracted economic troubles, the region is poised to recover and perhaps become stronger than ever. This timely work identifies the major challenges facing Asia's Four Tigers (Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong), Japan, China, and their Southeast Asian neighbors (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines) as the region increases it role and stature on the world stage. Highly regarded Asia policy makers and opinion shapers consider such key questions as: What is the appropriate response to China's ascent? Are there prospects for U.S.-Asian partnerships (in such areas as the environment)? Is economic cooperation between both sides of the Pacific realistic? How can Americans gain from Asia's attempts to rebuild her institutions? And will East Asia and the United States adjust to a multi-polar security and economic milieu?

Towards Recovery in Pacific Asia

Towards Recovery in Pacific Asia PDF Author: David S. G. Goodman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134594054
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
Attempts to define the Asian Crisis and its future course continue to be hotly contested. Towards Recovery in Pacific Asia deals with financial and industrial reform, defence policies, the 'Asian-Values' debate, corruption and croneyism; as well as China, Japan and intra-regional affairs. Rather than trying to resolve the heated debate about the causes of the crisis, this book reflects on underlying trends to examine the possible paths of recovery. Bringing together experts in the field, Towards Recovery in Pacific Asia suggests that recovery is by no means impossible nor as difficult as might at first have seemed. But it requires political reform, tackling specific economic problems and the international support of the US, European Union and World Bank. There are still causes for concern, such as Indonesia's transition from the Suharto era and political reform in China and, most significantly, Japan. With its highly topical focus on the social, political and economic development of the Asia Pacific region, this book represents a vital, up-to-date analysis for students and researchers in Asian studies, International Relations, International Political Economy, as well as policy makers and professionals working in, or with, Pacific Asia.
