ASEAN and the Responsibility to Protect

ASEAN and the Responsibility to Protect PDF Author: Thida Chanthima Neth
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040254608
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
This book adopts a sociolegal and interdisciplinary approach to examine how the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) has been understood within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Historically, the international community has struggled to effectively address humanitarian crises worldwide. The concept of the 'Responsibility to Protect' (R2P) has emerged over the past two decades as a principle that could guide states’ efforts to prevent and respond to humanitarian crises. However, R2P's interpretation varies across different regions, and it remains to be established whether it can successfully achieve its goals. This book adopts an interdisciplinary approach to analyse how R2P has been perceived and applied within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and China. In particular, it explores ASEAN’s, ASEAN member-states’ and China’s understanding and implementation of R2P, paying special attention to the 1999 East Timor crisis, the Rohingya crisis, and the West Papua conflict. The book assesses whether R2P has influenced the actions of ASEAN, its member states, and China. At a broader level, the book also explores regional approaches to international law, shedding light on Southeast Asian states’ perspectives on this aspect of global governance. This book will be of much interest to students of Responsibility to Protect, Asian politics, human rights, international law, and International Relations in general.

Responsibility to Protect

Responsibility to Protect PDF Author: Julia Hoffmann
Publisher: Amsterdam University Press
ISBN: 9085550556
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 385

Book Description

Cooperative Security in the Asia-Pacific PDF Author: Jürgen Haacke
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135183201
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 389

Book Description
This book offers the most comprehensive analysis yet of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), which remains the foremost dialogue forum for the promotion of cooperative security in the Asia-Pacific. Contributors focus on the perspectives and roles of the key players in the ARF – ASEAN, the United States, China, Japan, and Australia – and discuss to what extent these participants have shaped the Forum's institutional development and affected its achievements and prospects against the backdrop of the evolving regional security architecture. They also examine in depth how participants have used the Forum to respond to a range of important transnational security issues and challenges, including terrorism and maritime security, as well as disaster relief. This work also explores how, despite the difficulties in reaching a new consensus regarding the collective pursuit of preventive diplomacy, some activist participants have succeeded in bringing about a notable, albeit incipient, 'practical turn' in the ARF’s security cooperation. This book will appeal to students of South-East Asian Politics, Asian Security Studies and International Relations in general.

Southeast Asia and the Cold War

Southeast Asia and the Cold War PDF Author: Albert Lau
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0415684501
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 314

Book Description
The origins and the key defining moments of the Cold War in Southeast Asia have been widely debated. This book focuses on an area that has received less attention, the impact and legacy of the Cold War on the various countries in the region, as well as on the region itself. The book contributes to the historiography of the Cold War in Southeast Asia by examining not only how the conflict shaped the milieu in which national and regional change unfolded but also how the context influenced the course and tenor of the Cold War in the region. It goes on to look at the usefulness or limitations of using the Cold War as an interpretative framework for understanding change in Southeast Asia. Chapters discuss how the Cold War had a varied but notable impact on the countries in Southeast Asia, not only on the mainland countries belonging to what the British Foreign Office called the "upper arc", but also on those situated on its maritime "lower arc". The book is an important contribution to the fields of Asian Studies and International Relations.
