Arthur Schnitzler (1862 – 1931) gilt als bedeutendster literarischer Vertreter der sog. »Wiener Moderne«. Zunächst als Arzt tätig, etablierte sich Schnitzler um die Jahrhundertwende als einer der erfolgreichsten Bühnenautoren im deutschsprachigen Raum. Er war mit Sigmund Freud, Hugo von Hofmannsthal und Richard Beer-Hofmann befreundet. Bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs stellte er sich gegen die allgemeine Kriegsbegeisterung, was seine Popularität beschädigte. 1921 wurde er nach der Uraufführung seines Stücks »Der Reigen« wegen Erregung öffentlichen Ärgernisses angeklagt. Schnitzler zog sich danach aus der Öffentlichkeit zurück. Richard Specht (1870 – 1932) stammte ebenfalls aus Wien, wo er zunächst als Literaturkritiker, später vor allem mit Musik-Monographien bekannt wurde. Nachdruck der 1922 in Berlin erschienenen Originalausgabe.
