Even the President of the United States Sometimes Has Got to Stand Naked

Even the President of the United States Sometimes Has Got to Stand Naked PDF Author: Ari Marcopoulos
Publisher: Jrp Ringier
ISBN:
Category : Photography
Languages : en
Pages : 166

Book Description
Ari Marcopoulos is best known for documenting boyish subcultures from the inside out. His work on professional snowboarding appears in Transitions and Exits and his photos on hip-hop--five years of images of the Beastie Boys--in Pass the Mic. Aaron Rose, who showed Marcopoulos at Alleged Gallery, has said of the artist's uncanny connection with one set of subjects, a crowd of New York skateboarders ten years his junior, "There was just something in his personality that said, 'Hey man, it's cool.'" It shows. Marcopoulos's self-taught snapshot style brings his subjects in close, and captures, without sentimentality or voyeurism, the intimate feeling of their daily life. Here he focuses on the subculture that is his own family. Even the President of the United States Sometimes Has Got to Stand Naked is a journal-like collection of images of the accidents and pleasures of "normal" life, full of the artist's loved ones, of landscapes and of American social reality.

When Art Meets Money

When Art Meets Money PDF Author: Franz Schultheis
Publisher: Walther Konig Verlag
ISBN: 9783863357443
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
The Art Basel is more than just a fair in the commercial sense of the word, more than a temporally and spatially concentrated gathering of dealers offering their goods for sale to interested buyers. It is at the same time the site of a display of "holy" goods in the presence of thousands and thousands of believers, a pilgrim's goal for the ritualized adoration of modern and contemporary art. It is also, and for precisely this reason, the decisive witness of the upheaval marking a radical change in that relationship between "art" and "money" - with all the consequences, not least for the evaluation of what is to be regarded as genuine art. The present study, the result of several years of sociological field work, attempts to draw a picture of this change as perceived by the participants, the organizers of the fair, the gallerists, collectors, curators, art consultants and artists, as a central problem of the contemporary art scene. The authors, members of a research group of the University of St. Gallen, present in When Art meets Money a detailed study of the practice of the contemporary picture market, drawing upon Pierre Bourdieu's influential sociology of art.

A Regulatory Framework for the Art Market?

A Regulatory Framework for the Art Market? PDF Author: Anna Bolz
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031187431
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
This book addresses practical issues in connoisseurship and authentication, as well as the legal implications that arise when an artwork’s authenticity is challenged. In addition, the standards and processes of authentication are critically examined and the legal complications which can inhibit the expression of expert opinions are discussed. The notion of authenticity has always commanded the attention of art market participants and the general art-minded public alike. Coinciding with this, forgery is often considered to be the world’s most glamorous crime, packed with detective stories that are usually astonishing and often bizarre. The research includes findings by economists, sociologists, art historians, lawyers, academics and practitioners, all of which yield insights into the mechanics and peculiarities of the art business and explain why it works so differently from other markets. However, this book will be of interest not only to academics, but to everyone interested in questions of authenticity, forgery and connoisseurship. At the same time, one of its main aims is to advocate best practices in the art market and to stress the importance of cooperation among all disciplines with a stake in it. The results are intended to offer guidance to art market stakeholders, legal practitioners and art historians alike, while also promoting mutual understanding and cooperation.

Conceptualism in Latin American Art

Conceptualism in Latin American Art PDF Author: Luis Camnitzer
Publisher: University of Texas Press
ISBN: 9780292716292
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
Conceptualism played a different role in Latin American art during the 1960s and 1970s than in Europe and the United States, where conceptualist artists predominantly sought to challenge the primacy of the art object and art institutions, as well as the commercialization of art. Latin American artists turned to conceptualism as a vehicle for radically questioning the very nature of art itself, as well as art's role in responding to societal needs and crises in conjunction with politics, poetry, and pedagogy. Because of this distinctive agenda, Latin American conceptualism must be viewed and understood in its own right, not as a derivative of Euroamerican models. In this book, one of Latin America's foremost conceptualist artists, Luis Camnitzer, offers a firsthand account of conceptualism in Latin American art. Placing the evolution of conceptualism within the history Latin America, he explores conceptualism as a strategy, rather than a style, in Latin American culture. He shows how the roots of conceptualism reach back to the early nineteenth century in the work of Símon Rodríguez, Símon Bolívar's tutor. Camnitzer then follows conceptualism to the point where art crossed into politics, as with the Argentinian group Tucumán arde in 1968, and where politics crossed into art, as with the Tupamaro movement in Uruguay during the 1960s and early 1970s. Camnitzer concludes by investigating how, after 1970, conceptualist manifestations returned to the fold of more conventional art and describes some of the consequences that followed when art evolved from being a political tool to become what is known as "political art."

Carlos Betancourt

Carlos Betancourt PDF Author: Petra Mason
Publisher: Rizzoli Publications
ISBN: 0847846474
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 245

Book Description
Mixed-media artist Carlos Betancourt and his influential studio, Imperfect Utopia, helped to launch the Miami art scene in the 1980’s. Betancourt’s oeuvre is a lush explosion of radiant, eccentric colors in which he explores the kaleidoscope (multi-racial, multi-lingual, trans-cultural) of Caribbean and American culture. His work alludes to issues of memory, beauty, identity, and communication. He bends the lines between art, photography, and nature in his photographs, collages, painting, installations, and conceptual pieces. Carlos Betancourt’s imagery reinterprets the past and present and offers it in a fresh context. He is inspired by Puerto Rico, Miami, and his extensive travels; also artist Ana Mendieta’s interventions in nature, Robert Rauschenberg’s assemblages, Andy Warhol’s perceptions, Neo Rauch compositions, and a Federico Fellini-esque cast of characters for his photo assemblages. This exuberant volume explores Betancourt’s body of work, with more than 250 images and texts by art critic Paul Laster, art history professor Robert Farris Thompson and United States Inaugural Poet, Richard Blanco. His artwork is included in the permanent collections of various museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The National Portrait Gallery, and The Smithsonian Institute.
