Book Description
Excerpt from From Egypt to Japan On the Bosphorus there are birds which the Turks call lost souls, as they are never at rest. They are always on the wing, like stormy petrels, flying swift and low, just skimming the waters, yet darting like arrows, as if seeking for something which they could not find on land or sea. This spirit Of unrest sometimes enters into other wanderers than those Of the air. One feels it strongly as he comes to the end of one continent, and casts Off for another; as he leaves the firm, familiar ground, and sails away to the distant and the unknown. SO felt a couple of travellers who had left America to go around the world, and after six months in Europe, were now to push on to the farthest East. It was an autumn afternoon near the close Of the year 1875, that they left Constantino ple, and sailed down the Marmora, and through the Darda nelles, between the Castles of Europe and Asia, whose very names suggested the continents that they were leaving behind, and set their faces towards Africa. ROUND THE WORLD

Book Description
Excerpt from Round the World: Letters From Japan, China, India, and Egypt I was not ordered abroad by the doctors, but started in perfect health, which I retained through all the vicissitudes of climate, and was so fortunate as not to meet with any serious mishap to mar the pleasure of the journey. Only once, during that eventful night of the typhoon on the Chinese coast, did I question my prudence in being there, without the excuse of ill-health or busi ness. My motive was not merely the pursuit of pleasure, but the desire to gratify a long-cherished passion to see once in my lifetime the strange and curious nations of the Orient, books of travel among whom have always had for me a strange fascination. In these sketches I have confined my descriptions, in a great measure, to what passed under my own observation; and have endeavored to paint the curious and novel scenes in Japan, China, and India, as they appeared to a fresh traveler, without any attempt at fine writing, or high- own description. The unexpected courtesy and kindness everywhere met from both foreigners and natives, and the many chance acquaintances which have ripened into friendships that will endure for a lifetime, are among the pleasantest souvenirs of my journey. Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of Japan Our nearest neighbor across the Pacific has been reckoned among the foremost nations of the earth ever since, in the late war with China, she humiliated that vast but inert empire. Japan will have a voice in the future destiny of Asiatic countries, and in that of the islands of the Pacific. Our schoolbooks on geography and general history touch but lightly upon the Japanese Empire, and it is for the purpose of enabling children to obtain a correct idea of the people, and of the impulses leading to the rapid progress of the past quarter of a century, that "The Story of Japan" has been written. It was deemed essential to explain repeatedly the key to the history of Japan and to the reforms of our time, by noticing the overpowering influence of the samurai of old, who were and still are the makers of the nation. With a very few exceptions, the nobles of Japan have been wholly dependent upon their leading samurai, who, in turn, have been influenced by the ablest of their peers. A Journey Around the World (Classic Reprint)

A Journey Around the World (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Edwin S. George

Book Description
Excerpt from A Journey Around the World No one, however intelligent, could begin to tell the story of the countries and people referred to in this volume. This book sets forth the impressions made upon the author by the glimpses obtained in a journey around the world, and it must be remembered that im pressions can honestly differ among truthful, observing, studious travelers. This diary was written at the request of a loved one who was unable to accompany me, and with whom I thus hoped, in a small degree, to share my daily experiences, but with no thought of publication. Its publication is due far more to the encouraging suggestions of friends, than from any confident promptings of my own. The author claims no qualifications whatsoever as a writer, but endeavored at all times to keep his mind free from prejudices, and alert to everything about him, and espe cially endeavored to see the good in all things, but frank in his statements of facts as observed and noted herein. It was not, however, until we were bound for the Orient and had reached strange lands, inhabited by strange people, with strange customs, that I was aroused to any serious effort in the writing of a daily narrative in which I endeavored to reflect the conditions surrounding the writer, for examme: India, depressing; China, smiles; Korea, tragic; Japan, attractive but imperialistic. Book Description
Excerpt from Jaunt in Japan: Or Ninety Day's Leave in the Far East So many books dealing with Japan have already appeared that it is with considerable diffidence I venture to place these pages before the public. I am, however, somewhat encouraged to do so, knowing the difficulties we experienced in arriving at any definite decision on the dozen points of essential importance to travellers, which are generally unnoticed by most authors who have written about this interesting country. We had read all about Shoguns and Daimyos, Hara-Kari and Geishas; we had seen pictures of Fujiyama and Yokohama, and we had heard of the waterfalls and temples of Nikho; but we had never been informed, for instance, that the roads throughout the country are invariably execrable, or that the trains are always late and I overcrowded. Before setting out on our holiday, we had experienced a good deal of difficulty in the selection of our itinerary, and we could find nothing to help us in estimating the probable expenses of our trip. Peeps at Many Lands

Peeps at Many Lands PDF Author: John Finnemore

Book Description
Excerpt from Peeps at Many Lands: Japan F AR away from our land, on the other side of the world, lies a group of islands which form the kingdom of 'japan. The word Japan means the Land of the Rising Sun, and it is certainly a good name for a country of the Far East, the land of sunrise. The ag of Japan, too, is painted with a rising sun which 'sheds its beams on every hand, and this ag is now for ever famous, so great and wonderful have been the victories in which it has been borne triumphant over Russian arms. In some ways the Japanese are fond of comparing themselves with their English friends and allies. They point out that Japan is a cluster of islands o the coast of Asia, as Britain is a cluster of islands of? The coast of Europe. They have proved themselves, like the English, brave and clever on the sea, while their troops have fought as nobly as British soldiers on the land. Theyare fond of calling themselves the English of the East, and say that their land is the Britain of the Pacific. The rise of Japan in becoming one of the Great Powers of the world has been very sudden and wonder ful. Fifty years ago Japan lay hidden from the World she forbade strangers to visit the country, and very little was known of her people and her customs. Her navy then consisted of a few wooden junks; to-day she has a eet of splendid ironclads, handled by men who know their duties as well as English seamen. Her army consisted of troops armed with two swords and carrying bows and arrows to-day her troops are the admiration of the world, armed with the most modern weapons, and, as foes, to be dreaded by the most powerful nations. Fifty years ago Japan was in the purely feudal stage. Her great native Princes were called Daimios. Each had a strong castle and a private army of his own. There were ceaseless feuds between these Princes and constant fighting between their armies of samurai, as their followers were called. Japan was like England at the time of our War of the Roses: family quarrels were fought out in pitched battle. All that has now gone. The Daimios have become private gentlemen the armies of samurai have been disbanded, and Japan is ruled and managed just like a European country, with judges, and policemen, and law-courts, after the model of Western lands. Book Description
Excerpt from Japan and World Peace I have devoted a considerable space to Japan's relations with China, because those relations are most vital to the existence of the island nation. In speak ing of the prevailing conditions in China, I have, in the past, endeavored to express myself with re serve. But I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that the time has come when the world should be informed of the true situation. There is no use in evading the fact that China is utterly incapable of managing her own affairs, and that the civilized nations of the world must come to an agreement with a View to establishing an international guardianship for China.
