Book Description
Excerpt from Army Life in Virginia Letters From the Twelfth Vermont Regiment and Personal Experiences of Volunteer, Service in the War for the Union, 1862-63 The letters collected in this little volume are taken from the columns of the Burlington (Vt.) Free Press, to which paper they were written by its then junior editor. Describing scenes in army life, sketched currente calamo as they passed before the eye of the writer, with no attempt at writing history and containing little of "blood and thunder," it is not supposed that they will have much interest for the general reader; nor would they be now reprinted except in compliance with repeated requests from a number of my army comrades who have expressed a desire to preserve in permanent form what happened to be almost the only record published at the time (though but a fragmentary and imperfect one) of the service of the regiment to which they belonged. It was a service at best comparatively uneventful, and it is now, after over thirty years of peace, passing into oblivion for most of those who were not directly connected with it. For those who shared it, however, these letters seem still to have interest, and such as they are they are submitted in their present shape without further apology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Armistead and Hancock
Author: Tom McMillan
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 081176995X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 327
Book Description
In a war of brother versus brother, theirs has become the most famous broken friendship: Union general Winfield Scott Hancock and Confederate general Lewis Armistead. Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels (1974) and the movie Gettysburg (1993), based on the novel, presented a close friendship sundered by war, but history reveals something different from the legend that holds up Hancock and Armistead as sentimental symbols of a nation torn apart. In this deeply researched book, Tom McMillan sets the record straight. Even if their relationship wasn’t as close as the legend has it, Hancock and Armistead knew each other well before the Civil War. Armistead was seven years older, but in a small prewar army where everyone seemed to know everyone else, Hancock and Armistead crossed paths at a fort in Indian Territory before the Mexican War and then served together in California, becoming friends—and they emotionally parted ways when the Civil War broke out. Their lives wouldn’t intersect again until Gettysburg, when they faced each other during Pickett’s Charge. Armistead died of his wounds at Gettysburg on July 5, 1863; Hancock went on to be the Democratic nominee for president in 1880, losing to James Garfield. Part dual biography and part Civil War history, Armistead and Hancock: Behind the Gettysburg Legend clarifies the historic record with new information and fresh perspective, reversing decades of misconceptions about an amazing story of two friends that has defined the Civil War.

Chasing Jeb Stuart and John Mosby
Author: Robert F. O’Neill
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786492562
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 329
Book Description
This book is an operational and tactical study of cavalry operations in Northern Virginia from September 1862 to July 1863. It examines in detail John Mosby's first six months as a partisan, within the context of the larger threat to the Union capital posed by Jeb Stuart. Previous studies of Mosby's career are largely based on postwar memoirs. This narrative balances those accounts with previously unpublished official contemporary records left by the Union soldiers assigned to the defense of Washington, D.C. The formation of the Michigan Cavalry Brigade is fully documented, along with the exploits of the brigade in the months before George Custer took command. Largely forgotten events, such as Jeb Stuart's Christmas Raid, the fight at Fairfax Station during Stuart's ride to Gettysburg, as well as the vital role played by Union general Julius Stahel's cavalry division in the critical month of June 1863, are examined at length.
