Book Description
Excerpt from Arithmetic Simplified in Three Parts, Vol. 1 of 3 The public have this claim upon any author, who offers a new school book, that such a work shall contain some essential advantages, which are not to be found, in any other work already in use. If a writer cannot sustain such a claim, the public arc needlessly taxed, for an article which is not wanted. It therefore seems proper, that a statement should be made of what are supposed to be, the peculiar advantages and improvements in this work. The writer, for several years, has been engaged in instruction, and has either used, or examined, "all the most popular works on Arithmetic. The following are the deficiencies, which have been experienced, and which it is the aim of this work to supply. It should, however, be previously remarked, that all these difficulties have not been experienced in every work of the kind, heretofore examined: but some have existed in one, and some in another, and no one work, yet known to the writer, obviates them all. 1. The first difficulty, for which a remedy is here attempted, originates from the fact, that in every school, there is such a variety of age, intellect, and acquisition, that no one book is fitted for Them all. If a work is found adapted to advanced classes, it is too difficult for the younger and less advanced. If it is fitted to these last, it is too easy for the others. To remedy this, the following work is divided into Three Parts. The First Part is adapted to the comprehension of young children. The Second Part is fitted to older classes. The Third Part completes an entire system of Arithmetic, containing all that is required of students on entering college. The whole work embraces every thing of any consequence, that can be found in the most complete and extended works ever used, and yet so simplified as to occupy much less space, and to demand much less labor. There are enough subjects, of difficulty, to call forth mental industry and effort, without allowing those which are plain to remain involved in needless difficulties. Book Description
Excerpt from Course in Arithmetic, Vol. 1 of 3: A Treatise in Three Parts, Complete in One Volume IN presenting to the public a new treatise op Arithmetic, it is proper to call attention to the features which distinguish it from others, and to the need of. Radical changes in the traditional precepts retained in the text-books in current use. First, it is intended to present, in the compass of a single volume, a complete treatise, and, indeed, all that the average pupil needs to study on the subject from first to last. It is supposed the pupil has previously acquired those first elementary notions of numbers, such as may be best taught orally, and, indeed, should be learned before he is prepared to use a book for systematic study. Secondly, the subject-matter is arranged in three parts logically distinct, in each of which the pupil gives his attention to a Specific object, complete in itself. Book Description
Excerpt from First Book in Arithmetic, Vol. 1 of 3 HE division of this book into lessons is not at all intended 7to mark out the limit of the daily exercises. Each lesson dis cusses a separate topic, and many of them furnish or suggest mat ter upon which several days may be profitably spent. Some of them present drill exercises that may be frequently repeated with profit - returning to them from more advanced periods. Practically, the exercises embraced in this book cover three years or more of the primary school course as prescribed in most of our city schools. Advance slowly; one step at a time, and always secure a perfect mastery of any principle or Operation upon which another depends, before proceeding to the next. Go over only so much ground at any one exercise as may be thoroughly understood, and review daily. The greatest source of embarrassment to the teacher, and of dis gust and waning interest on the part of the pupil, is found in the accumulation of imperfectly mastered lessons. Endeavor to secure the interest of the class, and never do for a pupil what he can be readily led to do for himself. Slate exercises are important from the first, and if judiciously conducted can never fail to please and instruct. The various combinations by addition, subtraction, multiplica tion, and division, presented in the tables, furnish the instruments for all arithmetical Operations. If the pupil is skillful in these, the only other thing needful is such a familiar knowledge of the relation of things as to know what process should be used in the solution of problems. Book Description
Excerpt from The Natural Arithmetic, Vol. 3 The psychological fact that all mathematical knowledge is a system of relations, or ratios, has been recognized throughout the series. For the purpose of suggesting to the pupils the application of number to magnitude, the simple geometric forms have been gradually introduced. In book III the treatment of the several branches of the subject is completed, and, as a means of bringing to gether the parts of each subject in a general review, a summary is given of all the processes involved in com mon fractions, decimal fractions, and percentage.
