How much more to identification by a mother clinging to her offspring to keep him from danger, when the picture of the assassin is presented before her Did you hear the remark that Mrs. Williams made when she was cross examined 'by one of my learned friends? When she was asked how can you tell this man, by his profile or by his full face she answered: by his profile; for that was all I saw. But she said something else: It seems to me that I could always see that face. In the dark visions of the night it was ever before her, and the face -of the murderer was ever haunting the witness whom Providence had appointed for his identification. We did not know that she knew this. She was not subpoenaed as a witness. We be lieved, acting for the Commonwealth, that we had done all that we could to ferret out these offenders; but you can see that there are some things which human ingenuity, human sagacity and human endurance will omit and will neglect, and I can safely say that it looks to me as if the finger of God was here revealed, and as if it unerringly pointed out the evidence which the officers of the Commonwealth had not been able to secure. The husband of this woman had been subpoenaed and had come here as awitness, and she accompanied him. The husband was excluded from Court, but she was not. She came into the Court room and the moment she saw the profile of this pris oner sitting at this table, sitting among two or three men, with noth1ng upon his person or in his countenance to indicate that he was the prisoner. With no previous knowledge on, r part that this was the man who was being tried, but simply g him sitting there facing the table, with his profile toward her as she sat among the audience, she said to those around her: That is the man I saw passing the road when I was holding my son that morning. Not only did they not melt, they formed one of the most extensive and persistent ethnic subcultures in American history. Dennis Clark now offers an insightful analysis of the social means this group has used to perpetuate its distinctiveness amid the complexity of American urban life. Basing his study on family stories, oral interviews, organizational records, census data, radio scripts, and the recollections of revolutionaries and intellectuals, Clark offers an absorbing panorama that shows how identity, organization, communication, and leadership have combined to create the Irish-American tradition. In his pages we see gifted storytellers, tough dockworkers, scribbling editors, and colorful actresses playing their roles in the Irish-American saga. In the 1950s Centralia was a small town, like many others in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania. But since the 1960s, it has been consumed, outwardly and inwardly by a fire that has inexorably spread in the abandoned mines beneath it. The earth smokes, subsides, and breathes poisonous gases. No less destructive has been the spread of dissension and enmity among the townspeople. The Real Disaster Above Ground tells the story of the fire and the tragic failure of all efforts to counter it. This study of the Centralia fire represents the most thorough canvass of the documentary materials and the community that has appeared. The authors report on the futile efforts of residents to reach a common understanding of an underground threat that was not readily visible and invited multiple interpretations. They trace the hazard management strategies of government agencies that, ironically, all too often created additional threats to the welfare of Centralians. They report on the birth and demise of community organizations, each with its own solution to the problem and its diehard partisans. The final solution, now being put into effect, is to abandon the town and relocate its people. Centralia's environmental disaster, the authors argue, is not a local or isolated phenomenon. It warns of the danger lurking in our own technology when safeguards fail and disaster management policy is not in place to respond to failure, as the examples of Chernobyl and Bhopal have clearly demonstrated. The lessons in this study of the fate of a small town in Pennsylvania are indeed sobering. They should be pondered by a variety of social scientists and planners, by all those dealing with the behavior of people under stress and those responsible for the welfare of the public.
