Book Description
"About The Reprint ; The following report on the archaeology of some Ozark caves originally appeared as a portion of Bulletin 76, Smithsonian Institute, Bureau of American Ethnology, in 1922. The report has been an invaluable reference to historians and others who study Missouri's caves. It provided a base upon which much of the speleological work in Missouri has been built. However, the original has long been out of print and difficult to obtain. In order to make the work available to all of those interested, the Missouri Speleological Survey decided to reprint the portion pertaining to Missouri caves. The text was transcribed from the original report and none of Fowke's writing has been altered. Plates and figures were photographed from a copy of the bulletin. Many of these illustrations were initially of poor quality, but every effort has been made to ensure good reproduction. The numerals in parentheses in the page margins indicate the page numbers in the original report. An appendix provides synonymous names for the caves discussed by Fowke. ; The Editor"--Page 72.
