Excerpt from Archaeology of Ohio During this centennial year of Ohio, the attention of its citizens will be generally directed to its past. The State is remarkable for the number and extent of its earthworks, no spot of equal size on the globe having so many and so extensive monuments of earth. Whether one stands on the grounds of the Agricultural Society, in Licking County, inside the thirty-acre circle, with its high walls shutting out all view of modern civilization, and remembers that this was only one of many works extending tor miles in more than one direction; whether, as happened to me last summer, he spends three and a half hours clambering along the steep embankments of Fort Ancient, or whether he reads in books alone of these and various wonderful works, remembering again that there are over ten thousand mounds in the State, he will be alike amazed at such and so many remains left by a race so far unknown that it can as yet simply be styled "The Mound Builders." The interest has been romantic, and the temptation, in absence of evidence, to exercise the imagination, has been quite irresistible. As years have flown and knowledge from many investigators has been added up, it is time that archaeology shall begin to be certain and a science. The next step requires a competent experience and a sound judgement to decide both what is and what is not proven. For to be right it is quite important to know the limits and certainties of knowledge. This Society presents to its members with pleasure this little book, by Professor M. C. Excerpt from Archaeological History of Ohio: The Mound Builders and Later Indians Many persons interested in archaeology are desirous of extending their knowledge, but have not the time, opportunity, or perhaps courage to wade through the vast amount of literature that has accumulated on this subject in the past fifty years. To lighten this labor, an attempt is made in the following pages to compile so much of it as relates to Ohio antiquities, and present it in convenient form. As certain features of Ohio archaeology can not be understood when considered alone, there must be brought into the work a number of descriptions of remains. Outside her borders. This is the more necessary owing to the general impression that traces of the Mound Builders, wherever found or of whatever nature, belong to one race existing within one definite period of time. To the writer has been assigned the task of preparing the manu script and selecting the illustrations; the reproduction of the latter and the publication of the entire work has been assumed by the Ohio Archae ological and Historical Society. Most of the figures, except those in the chapter on relics, have been borrowed from the sources indicated in the text. The explanation of abbreviated references will be found in the appendix. The most extensive original contribution to this volume is an article, entitled The Pathfinders of Jefferson County, written by Mr. W. H. Hunter, editor of the Sieueenvz'lle Gazette, and one of the most diligent and painstaking students of Ohio history. Mr. Hunter is, moreover, a clear and vigorous writer. This article IS followed by a full account of the Centennial Anniversary of Jefferson County, celebrated at Steubenville, in August (24 - 26) 1897. Credit for gathering the data for this article and the putting of these data in proper historical form is also due to Mr. Hunter. The work done by Mr. Hunter was done can amore and was entered upon at the earnest request of the Sec retary of the Society. Certainly the task accomplished by Mr. Hunter could not have been done in a more faithful, accurate, scholarly or interesting manner.
