Book Description
The burial tumulus of Lofkend lies in one of the richest archaeological areas of Albania (ancient "Illyria"), home to a number of burial tumuli spanning the Bronze and Iron Ages of later prehistory. Some were robbed long ago, others were reused for modern burials; few were excavated under scientific conditions. Modern understanding of the pre- and protohistory of Illyria has largely been shaped by the contents of such burial mounds. What inspired the systematic exploration of Lofkend by UCLA was more than the promise of an unplundered necropolis; it was also a chance to revisit the significance of this tumulus and its fellows for the emergence of urbanism and complexity in ancient Illyria. In addition to artifacts, the recovery of surviving plant remains, bones, and other organic material contribute insights into the environmental and ecological history of the region.

Eternal Butrint

Eternal Butrint PDF Author: Richard Hodges
Publisher: Butrint Foundation
ISBN: 9781905680016
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
Located at a crossroads in the Mediterranean, the site of Butrint is a microcosm of changes in the region over the last 3,000 years. Few UNESCO World Heritage Sites command such scientific interest - and few are more richly documented. Set in a marshy landscape between an inland lagoon and the busy straits separating Corfu and Albania, Butrint boasts well-preserved, photogenic remains from most periods. The site has been occupied since at least the 8th century BC, and Virgil recounts how the Trojan exile, Aeneas, landed here before he founded Rome. Subsequent travellers have all recognised an elegiac beauty in the site. This book charts the development and change of Butrint, using the archaeological remains and environment to paint a grand, complex picture worthy of its millennia of history. It is illustrated with exceptional paintings by Grand Tourists like Edward Lear, the magnificent photographs of Luigi Ugolini, the recently discovered archives of the Communist period, and the Butrint Foundation's rich documentation. The book concludes by analysing how tourists are bringing economic hope to Albania as they dicsover the myth of Aeneas in its unspoilt landscape.

Light and Shadow

Light and Shadow PDF Author: Michael L. Galaty
Publisher: Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Press
ISBN: 1938770919
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 301

Book Description
Employing survey archaeology, excavation, ethnographic study, and multinational archival work, the Shala Valley Project uncovered the many powerful, creative ways whereby the men and women of Shala shaped their world: through dynamic, world-systemic relationships with the powers that surrounded but never fully conquered them. The Shala Valley Project presents the highlanders, the malesore, in the full complexity of their lives, while also unveiling a new, deeper history for the region--a history that reaches back to an unexpected fortified Iron Age site. Light and Shadow tells many stories. Archaeologists, historians, and students of tribes, of empires, of imperial-indigenous relations, of blood feud, of kinship, of the built landscape, of world-systems theory and sustainability science, and more, will find much here to digest. The people of Shala, to which Light and Shadow is dedicated, may serve as an example in our modern age, one in which persistent, tribal peoples still fight for their survival, and seek to preserve some degree of independence from capitalist economies bent on their incorporation.

Archaeological Investigations in a Northern Albanian Province: Results of the Projekti Arkeologjik I Shkodrës (PASH)

Archaeological Investigations in a Northern Albanian Province: Results of the Projekti Arkeologjik I Shkodrës (PASH) PDF Author: Michael L. Galaty
Publisher: University of Michigan Press
ISBN: 1951538730
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
To date, very few northern Albanian archaeological sites have been surveyed and excavated. Situated beyond the reach, and allure, of the Classical Greek colonies of south-central Albania, the region has drawn less scholarly attention. But in various ways, northern Albania is just as important to the ongoing archaeological debates regarding the origins of inequality and the rise of social complexity. Some of the earliest and largest hill forts and tumuli (burial mounds) in Albania, dating to the Bronze and Iron Age, are located in Shkodër. Shkodër (Rozafa) Castle became the capital of the so-called Illyrian Kingdom, which was conquered by Rome in the early 3rd century BC. This research report, focused on the province of Shkodër, is based on five years of field and laboratory work and is the first synthetic archaeological treatment of this region. The results of the Projekti Arkeologjik i Shkodrës (or PASH) are presented here in two volumes. Volume 1 includes geological context, a literature review, historical background, and reports on the regional survey and test excavations at three settlements and three tumuli. In Volume 2, the authors describe the artifacts recovered through survey and excavation, including chipped stone, small finds, and pottery from the prehistoric, Classical, Roman, medieval, and post-medieval periods. They also present results of faunal, petrographic, chemical, carpological, and strontium isotope analyses of the artifacts. These two volumes place northern Albania--and the Shkodër Province in particular--at the forefront of archaeological research in the Balkans.

Book Description
The book aims rethinking the cultural history of Mediterranean nationalisms between 19th and 20th centuries by tracing their specific approach to antiquity in the forging of a national past. By focusing on how national imaginaries dealt with this topic and how history and archaeology relied on antiquity, this collection of essays introduces a comparative approach presenting several cases studies concerning many regions including Spain, Italy and Slovenia as well as Albania, Greece and Turkey. By adopting the perspective of a dialogue among all these Mediterranean political cultures, this book breaks significantly new ground, because it shifts attention on how Southern Europe nationalisms are an interconnected political and cultural experience, directly related to the intellectual examples of Northern Europe, but also developing its own particular trends. Contributors are: Çiğdem Atakuman, Filippo Carlà, Francisco Garcia Alonso, Maja Gori, Eleni Stefanou, Rok Stergar, Katia Visconti.
