Book Description
Phase II Testing of five archaeological sites located within the Poinsett Electronic Combat Range (PECR), South Carolina, was conducted by New South Associates, sub contractor for Geo-Marine, Inc., for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, and the U. S. Air Force, Show Air Force Base (AFB). Most of PECR is located in Sumter County's Manchester Township, with the southern end extending into Fulton, and the eastern edge crossing over into Privateer. The five sites under examination are, from north to south, 38SU195, 38SU1A8, 38SU140, 38SU1 88, and 38SU209. Of these five, three were originally recorded as historic sites (095, 148, and 1 88), one was prehistoric (140), and the fifth (209) contained both historic and prehistoric components. These five sites are found from the northwest quadrant of the PECR, to the south- east corner, and cover every type of terrain found on the Range. The testing phase was performed in order to determine the nature and significance of these sites as well as to gather information, which would facilitate the responsible management of these resources. The work was conducted in accordance with, and in partial fulfillment of, the U.S. Air Force obligations under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended (PL-93-291), the Air Force Instruction on Cultural Resource Management (AFI 32- 7065), the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (PL- 90-190), Executive Order #11593, "Protection and Enhancement of the Cultural Environment," American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA) of 1978, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAG- PRA) of 1990, and ACC Policy on Curation of Archeological Collections (15 June 1998).

Book Description
This appendix presents the descriptive results of the ceramic analysis for the 1997 Phase II investigations at 20 prehistoric archeological Sites located in Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, South Carolina. The collection of 2,622 ceramics represents a sampling of nearly every prehistoric occupational period present in the Lower Wateree River valley, an estimated span of some 3,000 to 3,500 years. The typological classification and functional characteristics of the collection as a whole will be described and enumerated in this appendix. The entire ceramic collection was subjected to a single analytical program consisting of a set of attributes developed by the author for ceramic assemblages from the central and northern Coastal Plain of South Carolina. The coding sheet for the program and the raw data from the analysis are contained in Appendix B.

Book Description
This report presents the results of Phase II archeological testing of 20 prehistoric sites on the Poinsett Electronic Combat Range, Sumter County, South Carolina. The sites are located in the Coastal Plain province and ring the edge of Big Bay, one of the largest Carolina bays in South Carolina. All of the sites are located on land owned by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and the testing was conducted in order to assess each site's eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Based on the Phase II results, 11 of the tested sites are recommended as being eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. Taken together, these sites contain data relevant to the full record of prehistoric occupation in the Big Bay area. from the Paleo-Indian/Early Archaic; through the Early, Middle and Late Woodland; up to the Mississippian period. Based on previous investigations in the uplands of the Coastal Plain. it can be assumed that many of these components represent short-term residential or logistical occupations by small social groups involved in seasonal exploitation of the rich aquatic and terrestrial resources of Big Bay North and South. It is believed that coordinated investigation of these sites will provide a valuable source of data on diachronic variation in camp structure and settlement strategy throughout the entire prehistoric period in the Big Bay area.

The tested sites all contained prehistoric cultural materials dating to the Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian periods. Site 38SU58 was determined to be not eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historian Places, while sites 38SU191 and 38SU222 were determined to be eligible. The phase I survey revisited one previously recorded site, 38SU250 and discovered one new site, 38SU299. Site 38SU250 is recommended not eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, while Site 28SU299 is recommended potentially eligible for nomination.

The sites include one historic dwelling (38SU155) and seven prehistoric camps located in the vicinity of Big Bay. Phase II investigations at each site included systematic shovel testing following by test unit excavations to delineate site dimensions and artifact distribution, identify features and site stratigraphy, and assess the content and integrity of each site. As a result of these phase II investigations recommendation were made concerning each site's National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility.
