Book Description
The volume IV is a continuation of the series Trees of Costa Rica, started 42 years ago to describe the tree flora of a rich biodiversity country. This field guide contains 238 simple leaves species of Costa Rican trees, comprise in 18 plants families, Fabaceae-Malpighiaceae. Only 39 of them are endemic, meaning this volume include species with a wide distribution range, and for that, it will have a great utility within Central America region. The book offers information of tree groups (families) that are well known by its economic importance, high diversity, taxonomically complex and for been dominant in our forests. The information by species it been standardized to reach the maximum parallelism between them, to facilitate the comparative identification. The drawings show relevant diagnostic features that characterized each species and the distribution maps help to take decisions at the moment of making any identification. The pictures illustrate the beauty and identity of some of the species included. This volume summarized the intensive work of exploration and taxonomic studies done in our forests in the last 33 years, in which, the trees are been studied with emphasis.

Costa Rican Ecosystems
Author: Maarten Kappelle
Publisher: University of Chicago Press
ISBN: 022612164X
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 798
Book Description
In the more than thirty years since the publication of Daniel H. Janzen’s classic Costa Rican Natural History, research in this small but astonishingly biodiverse, well-preserved, and well-studied Latin American nation has evolved from a species-level approach to the study of entire ecosystems. And from the lowland dry forests of Guanacaste to the montane cloud forests of Monteverde, from the seasonal forests of the Central Valley to the coastal species assemblages of Tortuguero, Costa Rica has proven to be as richly diverse in ecosystems as it is in species. In Costa Rican Ecosystems, Maarten Kappelle brings together a collection of the world’s foremost experts on Costa Rican ecology—outstanding scientists such as Daniel H. Janzen, Jorge Cortés, Jorge A. Jiménez, Sally P. Horn, Robert O. Lawton, Quírico Jiménez M., Carlos Manuel Rodríguez, Catherine M. Pringle, and Eduardo Carrillo J., among others—to offer the first comprehensive account of the diversity, structure, function, uses, and conservation of Costa Rica’s ecosystems. Featuring a foreword and introductory remarks by two renowned leaders in biodiversity science and ecological conservation, Thomas E. Lovejoy and Rodrigo Gámez Lobo, in addition to chapters highlighting the geology, soils, and climate of Costa Rica, as well as the ecosystems of its terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats, and including previously unpublished information on Isla del Coco, this beautiful color-illustrated book will be an essential reference for academic scientists, students, natural history guides, conservationists, educators, park guards, and visitors alike.

Book Description
This book integrates the latest global developments in forestry science and practice and their relevance for the sustainable management of tropical forests. The influence of social dimensions on the development of silvicultural concepts is another spotlight. Ecology and silvicultural options form all tropical continents, and forest formations from dry to moist forests and from lowland to mountain forests are covered. Review chapters which guide readers through this complex subject integrate numerous illustrative and quantitative case studies by experts from all over the world. On the basis of a cross-sectional evaluation of the case studies presented, the authors put forward possible silvicultural contributions towards sustainability in a changing world. The book is addressed to a broad readership from forestry and environmental disciplines.
