The Myth of Arab Piracy in the Gulf

The Myth of Arab Piracy in the Gulf PDF Author: Muhammad Al-Qasimi
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000156370
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
The British became the dominant power in the Arab Gulf in the late eighteenth century. The conventional view has justified British imperial expansion in the Gulf region because of the need to supress Arab piracy. This book, first published in 1988, challenges the myth of piracy and argues that its threat was created by the East India Company for commercial reasons. The Company was determined to increase its share of Gulf trade with India at the expense of the native Arab traders, especially the Qawasim of the lower Gulf. However, the Company did not possess the necessary warships and needed to persuade the British Government to commit the Royal Navy to achieve this dominance. Accordingly the East India Company orchestrated a campaign to misrepresent the Qawasim as pirates who threatened all maritime activity in the northern Indian Ocean and adjacent waters. Any misfortune that happened to any ship in the area was attributed to the ‘Joasmee pirates’. This campaign was to lead eventually to the storming of Ras al-Khaimah and the destruction of the Qawasim. Based on extensive use of the Bombay Archives, previously unused by researchers, this book provides a thorough reinterpretation of a vital period in Gulf history. It also illuminates the style and method of the East India Company at a critical period in the expansion of the British Empire.

Book Description
A magnificent and indispensable portrayal of the rich folklore of the Islamic world. According to Islamic tradition, Allah created three types of beings: angels, made of light; humans, made of earth; and jinn, made of smokeless fire. Supernatural, shape-shifting, intelligent and blessed with free will and remarkable powers, jinn have over the ages been given many names - demon, spirit, ghoul, genie, ifrit and shaitan. Believed in by hundreds of millions of people throughout the world and from all faiths, jinn have played a particularly central role in the literature, culture and belief systems of the Middle East and the Islamic world. Legends of the Fire Spirits explores through time and across nations the enduring phenomenon of the jinn. From North Africa to Central Asia, from the Mediterranean to sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, this riveting, often chilling, yet reasoned book draws on ancient testimonies, medieval histories, colonial records, anthropologist's reports and traveller's tales to explore the different types of jinn, their behaviour, society, culture and long history of contact with humankind. It documents their links with famous figures in history such as King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and illustrates the varied and vivid portrayals of jinn in world literature. In essence, Legends of the Fire Spirits demonstrates the colourful diversity of human culture and the durability of faith and is a magnificent and indispensable portrayal of the rich folklore of the Islamic world.

Orientalism and the Myth of the Arab Mind PDF Author: Nissim Rejwan
Publisher: Nova Science Publishers
ISBN: 9781634843614
Category : Arab countries
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
"In Orientalism and the Myth of the Arab Mind, Nissim Rejwan deftly surveys, analyses, criticizes and dismisses the primarily Western Orientalists' insistence on dwelling on the so-called 'Arab mind.' In an attempt to amplify this idea, he cites a number of points made by scholars and observers who wrote on both sides of the subject: Raphael Patai, John Laffin, Edward Said, Bernard Lewis, and Akbar Ahmed, among others. Nissim Rejwan is the author of a dozen books on Arab and Middle Eastern culture and history, and manages skillfully to give a summary of the great number of points made by all those who took part in the controversial subject of 'the Arab mind.' Apart from this particular subject, Orientalism and the Myth of the Arab Mind offers a good deal on other Middle Eastern and Arab topics"--From publisher's website.
