Les premiers dispositifs à usage des chirurgiens-dentistes ont été commercialisés en 1990. Dans le domaine de la dentisterie esthétique les applications sont variées. De l'éclaircissement dentaire aux chirurgies gingivales complexes mettant en œuvre tous les critères d'évaluation de l'esthétique du sourire, le LASER apparaît polyvalent et performant. Il présente de nombreux avantages parmi lesquels des capacités d'hémostase et de stérilisation ainsi qu'une nette amélioration du confort des patients, même si les techniques conventionnelles sont encore largement préférées. Malgré ses atouts, le taux d'équipement des cabinets dentaires reste faible. Sa spécificité d'action et son coût en sont les principaux freins.

Une dyschromie dentaire désigne une « modification de la couleur normale d'une ou plusieurs dents ». La diversification de ses facteurs étiologiques en fait une problématique importante dans une société dont les interactions sociales sefondent sur des standards physiques. Dans une ère où une approcheconservatrice de la dentisterie se heurte à des doléances esthétiques affirmées, l'objectif est la réduction de l'invasivité. On peut se demander si le LASER pourrait offrir un avantage en ce sens, participant à allier gradient thérapeutique et effets globaux satisfaisants. Au cours du temps, de nombreuses techniques cherchant à potentialiser les effets des gels à base de peroxyde d'hydrogène ont été proposées, avec pour objectif de diminuer le temps d'application. Cette thèse a pour objectif de déterminer l'interêt d'utiliser un laser dans les techniques d'éclaircissement; d'en décrire les avantages mais aussi les limites, et de définir le protocole opératoire à appliquer. Notre étude visait à déterminer le gain de teinte obtenu par un éclaircissement assisté par un laser diode. Le laser nous a permis d'optimiser un traitement d'éclaircissement dentaire en un temps réduit, avec des résultats comparables à ceux obtenus par des techniques plus conventionnelles.
