Noncompact Lie Groups and Some of Their Applications

Noncompact Lie Groups and Some of Their Applications PDF Author: Elizabeth A. Tanner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401110786
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 493

Book Description
During the past two decades representations of noncompact Lie groups and Lie algebras have been studied extensively, and their application to other branches of mathematics and to physical sciences has increased enormously. Several theorems which were proved in the abstract now carry definite mathematical and physical sig nificance. Several physical observations which were not understood before are now explained in terms of models based on new group-theoretical structures such as dy namical groups and Lie supergroups. The workshop was designed to bring together those mathematicians and mathematical physicists who are actively working in this broad spectrum of research and to provide them with the opportunity to present their recent results and to discuss the challenges facing them in the many problems that remain. The objective of the workshop was indeed well achieved. This book contains 31 lectures presented by invited participants attending the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in San Antonio, Texas, during the week of January 3-8, 1993. The introductory article by the editors provides a brief review of the concepts underlying these lectures (cited by author [*]) and mentions some of their applications. The articles in the book are grouped under the following general headings: Lie groups and Lie algebras, Lie superalgebras and Lie supergroups, and Quantum groups, and are arranged in the order in which they are cited in the introductory article. We are very thankful to Dr.

Variable Structure Systems with Application to Economics and Biology

Variable Structure Systems with Application to Economics and Biology PDF Author: R. R. Mohler
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642474578
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
The proceedings of the Second US-Italy Seminar on Variable Structure Systems is published in this volume. Like the first seminar, its conception evolved from common research interests on bilinear systems at the Istituto di Automatica of Rome University and at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of Oregon State University. Again, the seminar was focused on variable structure systems in general. In this case, however, emphasis is given to applications in biology and economics along with theoretical investi gations which are so necessary to establish a unified theory and to motivate further developments in these applications of social significance. By bringing together the talents of social and biological scientists with those of engineers and mathematicians from throughout Italy and the United States, the seminar was intended to yield a cross-pollination of significant results and a base for more meaningful future research. The editors are encouraged by the progress, with which they hope the reader will agree, is made in this direction. No pretense is made, however, that completely satisfactory integration of theore tical results and applications has been accomplished at this time. Among the more important conclusions which have resulted from this seminar are that bilinear and more general variable structure models arise in a natural manner from basic principles for certain biological and economic processes.

Harmonic Analysis on Symmetric Spaces and Applications I

Harmonic Analysis on Symmetric Spaces and Applications I PDF Author: Audrey Terras
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461251281
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
Since its beginnings with Fourier (and as far back as the Babylonian astron omers), harmonic analysis has been developed with the goal of unraveling the mysteries of the physical world of quasars, brain tumors, and so forth, as well as the mysteries of the nonphysical, but no less concrete, world of prime numbers, diophantine equations, and zeta functions. Quoting Courant and Hilbert, in the preface to the first German edition of Methods of Mathematical Physics: "Recent trends and fashions have, however, weakened the connection between mathematics and physics. " Such trends are still in evidence, harmful though they may be. My main motivation in writing these notes has been a desire to counteract this tendency towards specialization and describe appli cations of harmonic analysis in such diverse areas as number theory (which happens to be my specialty), statistics, medicine, geophysics, and quantum physics. I remember being quite surprised to learn that the subject is useful. My graduate eduation was that of the 1960s. The standard mathematics graduate course proceeded from Definition 1. 1. 1 to Corollary 14. 5. 59, with no room in between for applications, motivation, history, or references to related work. My aim has been to write a set of notes for a very different sort of course.

Lie Group Machine Learning

Lie Group Machine Learning PDF Author: Fanzhang Li
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110499509
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 534

Book Description
This book explains deep learning concepts and derives semi-supervised learning and nuclear learning frameworks based on cognition mechanism and Lie group theory. Lie group machine learning is a theoretical basis for brain intelligence, Neuromorphic learning (NL), advanced machine learning, and advanced artifi cial intelligence. The book further discusses algorithms and applications in tensor learning, spectrum estimation learning, Finsler geometry learning, Homology boundary learning, and prototype theory. With abundant case studies, this book can be used as a reference book for senior college students and graduate students as well as college teachers and scientific and technical personnel involved in computer science, artifi cial intelligence, machine learning, automation, mathematics, management science, cognitive science, financial management, and data analysis. In addition, this text can be used as the basis for teaching the principles of machine learning. Li Fanzhang is professor at the Soochow University, China. He is director of network security engineering laboratory in Jiangsu Province and is also the director of the Soochow Institute of industrial large data. He published more than 200 papers, 7 academic monographs, and 4 textbooks. Zhang Li is professor at the School of Computer Science and Technology of the Soochow University.
