Applications of Algebra to Communications, Control, and Signal Processing

Applications of Algebra to Communications, Control, and Signal Processing PDF Author: Nigel Boston
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461438632
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 56

Book Description
Over the last 50 years there have been an increasing number of applications of algebraic tools to solve problems in communications, in particular in the fields of error-control codes and cryptography. More recently, broader applications have emerged, requiring quite sophisticated algebra - for example, the Alamouti scheme in MIMO communications is just Hamilton's quaternions in disguise and has spawned the use of PhD-level algebra to produce generalizations. Likewise, in the absence of credible alternatives, the industry has in many cases been forced to adopt elliptic curve cryptography. In addition, algebra has been successfully applied to problems in signal processing such as face recognition, biometrics, control design, and signal design for radar. This book introduces the reader to the algebra they need to appreciate these developments and to various problems solved by these techniques.

Communications, Computation, Control, and Signal Processing

Communications, Computation, Control, and Signal Processing PDF Author: Arogyaswami Paulraj
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461562813
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 572

Book Description
A. Paulraj*, V. Roychowdhury**, and C. Schaper* * Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University ** Dept. of Electrical Engineering, UCLA Innumerable conferences are held around the world on the subjects of commu nications, computation, control and signal processing, and on their numerous subdisciplines. Therefore one might not envision a coherent conference encom passing all these areas. However, such an event did take place June 22-26, 1995, at an international symposium held at Stanford University to celebrate Professor Thomas Kailath's sixtieth birthday and to honor the notable con tributions made by him and his students and associates. The depth of these contributions was evident from the participation of so many leading figures in each of these fields. Over the five days of the meeting, there were about 200 at tendees, from eighteen countries, more than twenty government and industrial organizations, and various engineering, mathematics and statistics faculties at nearly 50 different academic institutions. They came not only to celebrate but also to learn and to ponder the threads and the connections that Professor Kailath has discovered and woven among so many apparently disparate areas. The organizers received many comments about the richness of the occasion. A distinguished academic wrote of the conference being "the single most rewarding professional event of my life. " The program is summarized in Table 1. 1; a letter of reflections by Dr. C. Rohrs appears a little later.

Numerical Linear Algebra in Signals, Systems and Control

Numerical Linear Algebra in Signals, Systems and Control PDF Author: Paul Van Dooren
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400706022
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 481

Book Description
The purpose of Numerical Linear Algebra in Signals, Systems and Control is to present an interdisciplinary book, blending linear and numerical linear algebra with three major areas of electrical engineering: Signal and Image Processing, and Control Systems and Circuit Theory. Numerical Linear Algebra in Signals, Systems and Control will contain articles, both the state-of-the-art surveys and technical papers, on theory, computations, and applications addressing significant new developments in these areas. The goal of the volume is to provide authoritative and accessible accounts of the fast-paced developments in computational mathematics, scientific computing, and computational engineering methods, applications, and algorithms. The state-of-the-art surveys will benefit, in particular, beginning researchers, graduate students, and those contemplating to start a new direction of research in these areas. A more general goal is to foster effective communications and exchange of information between various scientific and engineering communities with mutual interests in concepts, computations, and workable, reliable practices.

Complex-Valued Matrix Derivatives

Complex-Valued Matrix Derivatives PDF Author: Are Hjørungnes
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139498045
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 271

Book Description
In this complete introduction to the theory of finding derivatives of scalar-, vector- and matrix-valued functions with respect to complex matrix variables, Hjørungnes describes an essential set of mathematical tools for solving research problems where unknown parameters are contained in complex-valued matrices. The first book examining complex-valued matrix derivatives from an engineering perspective, it uses numerous practical examples from signal processing and communications to demonstrate how these tools can be used to analyze and optimize the performance of engineering systems. Covering un-patterned and certain patterned matrices, this self-contained and easy-to-follow reference deals with applications in a range of areas including wireless communications, control theory, adaptive filtering, resource management and digital signal processing. Over 80 end-of-chapter exercises are provided, with a complete solutions manual available online.

Group Theory, Combinatorics, and Computing

Group Theory, Combinatorics, and Computing PDF Author: Robert Fitzgerald Morse
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821894358
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 202

Book Description
This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Group Theory, Combinatorics and Computing held from October 3-8, 2012, in Boca Raton, Florida. The papers cover a number of areas in group theory and combinatorics. Topics include finite simple groups, groups acting on structured sets, varieties of algebras, classification of groups generated by 3-state automata over a 2-letter alphabet, new methods for construction of codes and designs, groups with constraints on the derived subgroups of its subgroups, graphs related to conjugacy classes in groups, and lexicographical configurations. Application of computer algebra programs is incorporated in several of the papers. This volume includes expository articles on finite coverings of loops, semigroups and groups, and on the application of algebraic structures in the theory of communications. This volume is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students working in group theory and combinatorics. The articles provide excellent examples of the interplay between the two areas.

Signal Processing for Communications

Signal Processing for Communications PDF Author: Paolo Prandoni
Publisher: Collection Savoir suisse
ISBN: 2940222207
Category : Signal processing
Languages : en
Pages : 392

Book Description
With a novel, less classical approach to the subject, the authors have written a book with the conviction that signal processing should be taught to be fun. The treatment is therefore less focused on the mathematics and more on the conceptual aspects, the idea being to allow the readers to think about the subject at a higher conceptual level, thus building the foundations for more advanced topics. The book remains an engineering text, with the goal of helping students solve real-world problems. In this vein, the last chapter pulls together the individual topics as discussed throughout the book into an in-depth look at the development of an end-to-end communication system, namely, a modem for communicating digital information over an analog channel.

Linear Operator Theory in Engineering and Science

Linear Operator Theory in Engineering and Science PDF Author: Arch W. Naylor
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9780387950013
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 648

Book Description
This book is a unique introduction to the theory of linear operators on Hilbert space. The authors' goal is to present the basic facts of functional analysis in a form suitable for engineers, scientists, and applied mathematicians. Although the Definition-Theorem-Proof format of mathematics is used, careful attention is given to motivation of the material covered and many illustrative examples are presented. First published in 1971, Linear Operator in Engineering and Sciences has since proved to be a popular and very useful textbook.
