Uncertainty and Forecasting of Water Quality
Author: M.B. Beck
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642820549
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
Since the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis began its study of water quality modeling and management in 1977, it has been interested in the relations between uncertainty and the problems of model calibration and prediction. The work has focused on the theme of modeling poorly defined environmental systems, a principal topic of the effort devoted to environmental quality control and management. Accounting for the effects of uncertainty was also of central concern to our two case studies of lake eutrophication management, one dealing with Lake Balaton in Hungary and the other with several Austrian lake systems. Thus, in November 1979 we held a meeting at Laxenburg to discuss recent method ological developments in addressing problems associated with uncertainty and forecasting of water quality. This book is based on the proceedings of that meeting. The last few years have seen an increase in awareness of the issue of uncertainty in water quality and ecological modeling. This book is relevant not only to contemporary issues but also to those of the future. A lack of field data will not always be the dominant problem for water quality modeling and management; more sophisticated measuring techniques and more comprehensive monitoring networks will come to be more widely applied. Rather, the important problems of the future are much more likely to emerge from the enhanced facility of data processing and to concern the meaningful interpretation, assimilation., and use of the information thus obtained.

Comparative Analysis of Monte Carlo Simulation and Stochastic Response Surface Method Applied to Water Quality Modeling
Author: Farouk Mollah Banna
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Monte Carlo method
Languages : en
Pages : 172
Book Description
Compares Monte Carlo simulation, where inputs are represented by probability distribution functions, and the stochastic response surface method (SRSM), where inputs and outputs are approximated using series expansions of standard random variables, in water quality modeling using Streeter Phelps equations. Uses the specific case of water quality problems of the Neuse River in North Carolina to compare these two methods. Seeks to determine how the modeling results representation can be better improved by developing and analyzing their output probability distributions based on input variability, the optimal number of runs for the two methods, and how the two methods compare in terms of results efficiency and computational effort.

Statistical Methods in Hydrology
Author: Charles T Haan
Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell
ISBN: 9780813815039
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 378
Book Description
This classic text and reference has been totally revised, redesigned, and comprehensively updated for the new millennium and beyond—bound in a new, revamped hardcover version. Inside, the reader will find improved coverage of time series analysis by the addition of a treatment of IRIMA models, improved coverage of regression with the addition of consideration of multicollinarity and correlated errors, increased material on Bayesian statistics, and a major section on the use of statistics in hydrologic and water quality modeling; which includes sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, First Order Analysis, uncertainty analysis, parameter estimation for models, and calibration and verification of models. A greater emphasis, in this new edition, has been on the use of computers in statistical analysis without the dependence on any one particular software vendor. The reader of this new edition will also notice improved coverage on plotting and graphical analysis and some added coverage of nonparametric terms applicable in hydrology. Exercises follow nearly every chapter for increased retention and learning.
