Book Description
A plant information model (PIM) is a set of interlinked information about plant structures, systems and components, incorporating plant data, relationships and rules used to integrate, represent, and describe nuclear facility processes and data, for each phase of the facility lifecycle. Application of the PIM provides an opportunity to radically improve knowledge, information and data capture, integration, use and transfer between stakeholders if industry-wide standards and best practices are adopted. A knowledge-centric plant information model could be developed and leveraged as a modern and efficient approach to better support, manage and enable seamless sharing, transfer and use of sustainable design knowledge within and across each nuclear power plant life cycle phase. The purpose of this publication is to provide an overview of PIMs, emphasize the importance of their application in support and management of design knowledge throughout the nuclear power plant life cycle and present an overview of a knowledge-centric plant information model that builds on the basic concept of a PIM. The target users of this publication are decision-making organizations in Member States having experience with nuclear power programmes and those embarking on new nuclear power programmes.

Plant Life Management Models for Long Term Operation of Nuclear Power Plants

Plant Life Management Models for Long Term Operation of Nuclear Power Plants PDF Author: International Atomic Energy Agency
Publisher: IAEA Nuclear Energy
ISBN: 9789201030146
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
When nuclear power plants reach the end of their nominal design life, they undergo a special safety review and an ageing assessment of their essential structures, systems and components for the purpose of validating or renewing their licence to operate for terms beyond the service period originally intended. Three different plant life management models have been used to qualify these nuclear power plants to operate beyond their original design life. This publication presents a collection of sample licensing practices for long term operation among IAEA Member States. The various plant life management models used to obtain long term operation authorizations are described and comparisons drawn against the standard periodic safety review model. Lessons learned and warnings about possible complications and pitfalls are also described to minimize the licensing risk during operation and future long term operation applications. The main intention of this publication is to support nuclear power plant owners and operators planning an extension of plant operation beyond its original design life, but it also serves as a useful guide for those interested in procuring, from the beginning, the necessary tools to implement ageing management in their future plant with long term operation in mind.

Exploring Semantic Technologies and Their Application to Nuclear Knowledge Management

Exploring Semantic Technologies and Their Application to Nuclear Knowledge Management PDF Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN: 9201146205
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 92

Book Description
Within the nuclear field, a vast body of knowledge, involving scientific, technical and managerial fields, is distributed among many organizations of different types. Managing and provisioning distributed knowledge is therefore becoming one of the major challenges in federated organizational environments. This publication provides information to organizations dealing with nuclear knowledge and its management. It covers an introduction to semantic information technologies, the Worldwide Web standards developed for interoperability, the construction of knowledge bases on the basis of distributed knowledge, and the development of knowledge driven applications. In addition to providing insight into the development of distributed knowledge bases, the intent of this publication is to provide examples of applications of semantic technologies specifically in the nuclear field.

Materials for Nuclear Plants

Materials for Nuclear Plants PDF Author: Wolfgang Hoffelner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1447129156
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 502

Book Description
The clamor for non-carbon dioxide emitting energy production has directly impacted on the development of nuclear energy. As new nuclear plants are built, plans and designs are continually being developed to manage the range of challenging requirement and problems that nuclear plants face especially when managing the greatly increased operating temperatures, irradiation doses and extended design life spans. Materials for Nuclear Plants: From Safe Design to Residual Life Assessments provides a comprehensive treatment of the structural materials for nuclear power plants with emphasis on advanced design concepts. Materials for Nuclear Plants: From Safe Design to Residual Life Assessments approaches structural materials with a systemic approach. Important components and materials currently in use as well as those which can be considered in future designs are detailed, whilst the damage mechanisms responsible for plant ageing are discussed and explained. Methodologies for materials characterization, materials modeling and advanced materials testing will be described including design code considerations and non-destructive evaluation concepts. Including models for simple system dynamic problems and knowledge of current nuclear power plants in operation, Materials for Nuclear Plants: From Safe Design to Residual Life Assessments is ideal for students studying postgraduate courses in Nuclear Engineering. Designers on courses for code development, such as ASME or ISO and nuclear authorities will also find this a useful reference.

Specific Considerations and Guidance for the Establishment of Ionizing Radiation Facilities

Specific Considerations and Guidance for the Establishment of Ionizing Radiation Facilities PDF Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN: 9201474229
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 116

Book Description
Various nuclear techniques have led to opportunities to enhance quality of life through services offered by ionizing radiation facilities (IRFs). National nuclear institutions, universities, medical centres, and private companies have established and used IRFs not only for research and development purposes but also for the provision of commercial services and goods. This publication provides guidance for organizations and institutions working on IRF projects to enable them to undertake them in a well-organized manner. It includes considerations for a feasibility study, provides detailed methodologies on how to assess the status of the necessary infrastructure, and aims to help Member States as well as their respective organizations to understand their commitments and obligations associated with an IRF project. It is intended to be used by managers, staff, decision makers at the national level and other stakeholders at institutions that are seeking or supporting the establishment of an IRF.

Management of Nuclear Power Plant Projects

Management of Nuclear Power Plant Projects PDF Author: IAEA
Publisher: International Atomic Energy Agency
ISBN: 9201055226
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 221

Book Description
Member States intending to introduce a nuclear power programme will need to pass through several phases during the implementation. Experience shows that careful planning of the objectives, roles, responsibilities, interfaces and tasks to be carried out in different phases of a nuclear project is important for success. This publication presents a harmonized approach that may be used to structure the owner/operator management system and establish and manage nuclear projects and their development activities irrespective of the adopted approach. It has been developed from shared management practices and consolidated experiences provided by nuclear project management specialists through a series of workshops and working groups organized by the IAEA. The resultant publication presents a useful framework for the management of nuclear projects from initiation to closeout and captures international best practices.

Human Factors and Design

Human Factors and Design PDF Author: Yuri Spirochkin
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 9811988323
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 231

Book Description
This book describes various manifestations of human factors when interacting with potentially dangerous technical systems: airplanes, launch vehicles and spaceships, nuclear power plants, energy-saturated ground vehicles and infrastructure facilities. The idea of the book arose from the desire to find a common ground between industries that are important for safety. Their similarity lies, in addition to the technological advancement of products and solutions, in equally high safety requirements, in particular taking into account the influence of human factor. Thus, it is of relevance to analyze an impact of human factor in the context of safety. The matter is rather complex: on the one hand humans manage technical systems, on the other hand human errors, negligence or evil intentions can turn the system into a threat with disastrous consequences. However, human interaction with any technical system begins earlier – in the design stage. In this stage, designer, being creator of the system, must ensure a safe operation and take into consideration possible risks, including those caused by human factors itself. The book is interdisciplinary in nature and intended mainly for designers of technical systems, aiming to assist the specialists in understanding the issues of human participation in life cycle of these systems. The examples given are intended to benefit from experiences of not one, but a number of industries.
