Les États en Afrique sont nés dans les circonstances particulières de la colonisation, c'est-à-dire dans un contexte de la balkanisation de l'Afrique consacrée par la conférence internationale de Berlin de 1885. C'est pourquoi la plupart des différends qui naissent dans ce continent sont liés aux traçages des frontières héritées de la colonisation. Néanmoins, malgré toutes les revendications territoriales et les conflits frontaliers, le principe de l'intangibilité des frontières est respecté. Ce qui est à la base de la relative stabilité en Afrique. Par ailleurs, cette stabilité est renforcée par les mécanismes de règlement des différends frontaliers institués par l'OUA puis l'UA. Toutefois, l'ouvrage met l'accent sur la nécessité de penser aux solutions idoines propres à l'Afrique pour une stabilité pérenne dans le temps malgré la présence des précités mécanismes. Car ces derniers n'ont jusque-là pas pu régler définitivement les différends ou conflits frontaliers si ce n'est que les apaiser ou geler. D'où l'intégration africaine est l'une de meilleures perspectives au règlement des différends en Afrique. Pour des raisons pédagogiques, le lecteur trouvera en annexe quelques principaux textes relatifs aux frontières en Afrique dont certains ont été cités dans le corps du texte.
