Book Description
Excerpt from Appleton's Standard Speller There are two steps before writing and composition; namely, pronunciation and spelling. The Speller works from the first step toward the third. Therefore, Phonic Drill begins in the First Year and is carried through the Fourth; and syllabication and accent begin in the Third and continue to the end of the book, being delayed so much only because the pupil should first recognize the written words as wholes. It is suggested that the teacher supplement the Phonic Drills by calling attention to some general rules of pronunciation; for example, to the short vowel before a doubled consonant, to the long vowel before a single consonant followed by e, and to the frequency of hard 9 and hard 0 before a and o and of soft g and soft 0 before 6 and i. In the step from pronunciation to spelling, Word Building is a help; and exercises in Word Building occur in the Second, Third, and Fourth Years. The sentences, introduced as much to practice readiness and ease in spelling as to illustrate the meanings of words, are not always limited to the word list immediately preceding, but often give opportunity for test and review. As helpful to the work in Dictation, the uses of the simpler marks of punctuation have been explained and illustrated. At the close of the work in Punctuation, there begins, in the Fifth Year, the systematic drill in Etymology, which is treated simply, with abundant explanation, illustration, and practice work. And as a last step toward that careful composition work for which the book is preparing is a list of Synonyms, defined. In the section for Advanced Grades, the apportionment of the material in lessons has been left to the teacher, who can best suit the work to the time and deficiencies of the particular class. Book Description
Excerpt from The New American Primary Speller Fob years past teachers have been demanding a spelling book suitable 'for children. This little work has been prepared by one who, in com mon with his fellow-teachers, has pitied children compelled to memorize long lists of words, many of which they rarely use in after life, and to which they can seldom attach any meaning. We claim for this book a plan simple and methodical. Lessons are first given which illustrate the vowel sounds. Then, beginning at home, a list of words is given suggestive of a detailed description of well-known objects. From home and its surroundings the child is led by easy steps to other familiar places of interest. As his range of vision is extended his vocabulary increases, and thus his language is built up. He needs to know how to spell these words, and he should be taught to weave them into sentences as well as to spell them, for the words are not his until he can so use them. Book Description
Excerpt from Elementary-School Speller IN recent years a number of careful investigations have been made as to the extent of the vocabularies that are employed by adults in personal and business correspondence, and also by pupils in the writ ten work required in Elementary schools. The results of these investigations indicate that in these several fields the number of different words employed is decidedly less than has been generally supposed. Accordingly, many educa tors have suggested that the vocabulary of the spelling book should be limited to the words in practical use in composition, and that ample provision should be made for their imten sive study in the regular drill work of the schoolroom. The elementary-school Speller has been prepared in response to these suggestions. It is planned to cover the formal work in spelling and word-study for the grades below the high school. The Graded School Speller, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint)

The Graded School Speller, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Frank Ellsworth Spaulding
Publisher: Forgotten Books

Pages : 70

Book Description
Excerpt from The Graded School Speller, Vol. 5 The most important features which characterize the books of this series are the following: words are presented at the same time in columns and in use; they are used not in dry, isolated sentences, but in sentences naturally connected in describing the manifold interests, occupations, and experiences of childhood, in telling children's classic stories, in biographies of great men, in describing historical events, in explaining the chief features of the government of city, state, and nation. All this matter is carefully graded both in respect to the words and the thought, and is pre sented in a way to interest and instruct. The pupil is conscious of the meaning and the use of the word as he learns to spell it. If the context does not make the meaning of a word clear to a pupil, it does enable him to use his dictionary intelligently in getting the meaning of the word. By means of this method of presentation words are reviewed, many of the more difficult ones repeatedly. This review is not a mere mechanical repetition of the isolated word; each time the word recurs it is in use. This is the most effective kind of review. At the same time the meaning of the word is becoming, for the child, broader, fuller, and more clearly defined. Book Description
Excerpt from The Merrill Speller That the child should focus his attention on a very few words at one time; that these words should have a definite meaning and utility to him; and that they should reappear in his writing and in his spelling lessons so that he cannot forget them - these are the main principles on which the merrill speller is built. In the Third Year two words are selected for special study in each lesson, supplemented by four easier words. The number of words in a lesson is increased in the succeeding grades, but the same distinction is kept between the words presenting spelling difficulties and the secondary list of review words or relatively easy words. It is primarily the teacher who must see that the children know the meaning of the word they study and that they use it correctly. In the text-book we can show the meaning of a word by its context in sentences, by grouping it with synonyms or words related in sense, and by directing the pupil to the dictionary. Reviewing, not only throughout the grade but in the spelling lessons of later years, is essential to permanent mastery of diffi cult words. In this Speller the fifth lesson of each week is de voted to a review of the week's work, and a general review is provided four times a year. For further review, the more difficult words are carried from grade to grade for study in the secondary lists. In selecting the vocabulary we have drawn chiefly from lists of words frequently misspelled and words that teachers in many different localities have selected for special drill. Webster's New International Dictionary, revision of 1910, has been used as the spelling authority. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
