System Identification
Author: Rik Pintelon
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470640375
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 786
Book Description
System identification is a general term used to describe mathematical tools and algorithms that build dynamical models from measured data. Used for prediction, control, physical interpretation, and the designing of any electrical systems, they are vital in the fields of electrical, mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering. Focusing mainly on frequency domain techniques, System Identification: A Frequency Domain Approach, Second Edition also studies in detail the similarities and differences with the classical time domain approach. It high??lights many of the important steps in the identification process, points out the possible pitfalls to the reader, and illustrates the powerful tools that are available. Readers of this Second Editon will benefit from: MATLAB software support for identifying multivariable systems that is freely available at the website http://booksupport.wiley.com State-of-the-art system identification methods for both time and frequency domain data New chapters on non-parametric and parametric transfer function modeling using (non-)period excitations Numerous examples and figures that facilitate the learning process A simple writing style that allows the reader to learn more about the theo??retical aspects of the proofs and algorithms Unlike other books in this field, System Identification, Second Edition is ideal for practicing engineers, scientists, researchers, and both master's and PhD students in electrical, mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering.

Definition of Pain and Distress and Reporting Requirements for Laboratory Animals
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309072913
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 131
Book Description
In this first in a proposed series of workshops on regulatory issues in animal care and use, the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research (ILAR) has addressed the existing and proposed requirements for reporting pain and distress in laboratory animals. The Animal Welfare Act, administered by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), mandates that pain and distress in laboratory animals be minimized. USDA is considering two policy changes with regard to this specific mandate. Firstly, since there has been no functional definition of "distress," USDA has prepared such a definition and requested feedback from the scientific community on its usefulness for regulatory and reporting requirements. The second issue concerns the pain and distress categorization scheme for reporting to USDA. Various groups and individuals have questioned the efficacy of the current categories, and specific changes have been proposed by the Humane Society of the United States. USDA is considering these and other potential changes to the existing scheme. Thus, given these potential changes to animal welfare policy, the aim of the ILAR/NIH joint workshop was to provide feedback to the USDA. The speakers were asked to address these two issues as well as to comment upon whether the information contained in the 1992 ILAR report Recognition and Alleviation of Pain and Distress in Laboratory Animals is still useful to investigators in assisting them to comply with regulations. The speakers provided perspectives based on their individual expertise in the areas of science of pain and distress, animal welfare policy, protocol review, and/or as representatives of relevant organizations or institutions. The following proceedings are an edited transcript of their presentations.

PLEASE NOTE - the "search in book" function is not currently supported on Apple IOS Devices at this time. All other functions are supported. This manual is prepared as a field guide for the environmental health professional following a major disaster. It is intended as an overview of the key response and recovery elements that are likely to be encountered and that will require prompt, informed decisions to protect the health and safety of the public. This manual is not intended to serve as a disaster response plan. It is intended to supplement existing plans with information most needed by an environmental health practitioner in responding to a disaster. The following major sections are included: 1. Structure of Emergency Operations 2. Water 3. Food 4. Liquid Waste 5. Solid Waste 6. Housing/Mass Care Shelters 7. Vector Control 8. Hazardous Materials 9. Medical Waste 10. Radiological Materials 11. Debris Management California is a state with an extensive geographic area, a long ocean shoreline, climatic extremes, broad geologic variations, a large number of known and unknown earthquake faults, and areas of dense population and industrial development. It is subject to a broad spectrum of destructive forces, including earthquakes, volcanoes, tidal waves, severe storms, floods, wildland fires, nuclear accidents, hazardous materials incidents, and acts of terrorism.

Supply and Demand Management in Ride-Sourcing Markets
Author: Jintao Ke
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0443189382
Category : Transportation
Languages : en
Pages : 408
Book Description
Supply and Demand Management in Ride-Sourcing Markets offers a fundamental modeling framework for characterizing ride-sourcing markets by spelling out the complex relationships among key endogenous and exogenous variables in the markets. This book establishes several economic models that can approximate matching frictions between drivers and passengers, describes the equilibrium state of ride-sourcing markets, and more. Based on these models, the book develops an optimum strategy (in terms of trip fare, wage and/or matching) that maximizes platform profit. While the best social optimum solution (for maximizing the social welfare) is generally unsustainable, this book provides options governments can use to encourage second-best solutions. In addition, the book's authors establish models to analyze ride-pooling services, with traffic congestion externalities incorporated into models to see how both new platforms and government designs can optimize operating strategies in response to the level of traffic congestion. - Serves as a foundation for subsequent research studies that investigate ride-sourcing services through mathematical modeling - Offers valuable managerial insights for ride-sourcing platforms and helps them develop more efficient and effective operating strategies - Assists the governments or social planners in designing appropriate regulatory schemes to achieve more sustainable and societally beneficial market outcomes
