Book Description
Excerpt from Aphorisms on Drawing I ought, perhaps, first of all, to apologize for the pompous title of this little book; for it sounds very self-sufficient and conceited. Nothing, however, is further from my thoughts, and, I hope, also from my style. For I feel no sympathy with certain voluminous theorists, who make rules of their own in drawing, and lay them down as a law for others. But most of those who have had experience in drawing, from the first outline by the girl of Corinth, to the present time of "Drawing made easy," have cultivated the art more or less in a way of their own; and some fancy they may know something which their neighbour does not. That, indeed, is often a mistake; and it may be so in this case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A Theory of the Aphorism

A Theory of the Aphorism PDF Author: Andrew Hui
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691210756
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
Aphorisms-- or philosophical short sayings--appear everywhere, from Confucius to Twitter, the Buddha to the Bible, Heraclitus to Nietzsche. Yet despite this ubiquity, the aphorism is the least studied literary form. What are its origins? How did it develop? How do religious or philosophical movements arise from the enigmatic sayings of charismatic leaders? And why do some of our most celebrated modern philosophers use aphoristic fragments to convey their deepest ideas? In A Theory of the Aphorism, Andrew Hui crisscrosses histories and cultures to answer these questions and more. With clarity and precision, Hui demonstrates how aphorisms-- ranging from China, Greece, and biblical antiquity to the European Renaissance and nineteenth century--encompass sweeping and urgent programs of thought. Constructed as literary fragments, aphorisms open new lines of inquiry and horizons of interpretation. In this way, aphorisms have functioned as ancestors, allies, or antagonists to grand systems of philosophy. Encompassing literature, philology, and philosophy, the history of the book and the history of reading, A Theory of the Aphorism invites us to reflect anew on what it means to think deeply about this pithiest of literary forms.

Drawing Near

Drawing Near PDF Author: John Paul Bevere
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 1418513490
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 250

Book Description
In Drawing Near, John Bevere invites readers to explore a life of intimacy with God. Emphasizing the need for obedience, he urges us to practice-just as we would practice anything we hope to improve-our communication with the Holy Spirit. Understanding that prayer is a dialogue, not a monologue, Bevere encourages us to listen at the Father's feet. Study questions in each chapter offer opportunity for reflection, and a "How to draw near to God" section offers practical steps toward developing true intimacy with Him.

Where to Draw the Line

Where to Draw the Line PDF Author: Anne Katherine
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1439148090
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 270

Book Description
From the author of the perennial favorite Boundaries, a practical guide to establishing and maintaining healthy limits in many different situations. With every encounter, we either demonstrate that we’ll protect what we value or that we’ll give ourselves away. Healthy boundaries preserve our integrity. Unlike defenses, which isolate us from our true selves and from those we love, boundaries filter out harm. This book provides the tools and insights needed to create boundaries so that we can allow time and energy for the things that matter—and helps break down limiting defenses that stunt personal growth. Focusing on every facet of daily life—from friendships and sexual relationships to dress and appearance to money, food, and psychotherapy—Katherine presents case studies highlighting the ways in which individuals violate their own boundaries or let other people breach them. Using real-life examples, from self-sacrificing mothers to obsessive neat freaks, she offers specific advice on making choices that balance one’s own needs with the needs of others. Boundaries are the unseen structures that support healthy, productive lives. Where to Draw the Line shows readers how to strengthen them and hold them in place every day.

Syllabus

Syllabus PDF Author: Lynda Barry
Publisher: Drawn & Quarterly
ISBN: 177046543X
Category : Comics & Graphic Novels
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
Writing exercises and creativity advice from Barry's pioneering, life-changing workshop The award-winning author Lynda Barry is the creative force behind the genre-defying and bestselling work What It Is. She believes that anyone can be a writer and has set out to prove it. For the past decade, Barry has run a highly popular writing workshop for nonwriters called Writing the Unthinkable, which was featured in The New York Times Magazine. Syllabus: Notes from an Accidental Professor is the first book to make her innovative lesson plans and writing exercises available to the public for home or classroom use. Barry teaches a method of writing that focuses on the relationship between the hand, the brain, and spontaneous images, both written and visual. It has been embraced by people across North America—prison inmates, postal workers, university students, high-school teachers, and hairdressers—for opening pathways to creativity. Syllabus takes the course plan for Barry’s workshop and runs wild with it in her densely detailed signature style. Collaged texts, ballpoint-pen doodles, and watercolor washes adorn Syllabus’s yellow lined pages, which offer advice on finding a creative voice and using memories to inspire the writing process. Throughout it all, Barry’s voice (as an author and as a teacher-mentor) rings clear, inspiring, and honest.
