Excerpt: The Antonov An-2 (Russian nickname: kukuruznik - a maize worker (inherited from Polikarpov Po-2)) also nicknamed "Annushka"; is a single-engine biplane utility/agricultural aircraft designed in the USSR in 1946. (USAF/DoD reporting name Type 22, NATO reporting name Colt). Private An-2 at the Miramar AirshowThe An-2 is used as a light utility transport, parachute drop aircraft, agricultural work and many other tasks suited to this large slow-flying biplane. Its slow flight and good field performance make it suited for short, unimproved fields, and some specialized variants have also been built for cold weather and other extreme environments. The Guinness Book of World Records states that the 45-year production run for the An-2 was for a time the longest ever, for any aircraft, but it was recently exceeded by the Lockheed C-130 Hercules. The Antonov An-2 was designed to meet a 1947 Soviet Ministry of Forestry requirement for a replacement for the Polikarpov Po-2, which was used in large numbers in both agricultural and utility roles. Antonov designed a large single bay biplane of all-metal construction, with an enclosed cockpit and a cabin with room for seats accommodating twelve passengers. The first prototype, designated SKh-1, and powered by a Shvetsov ASh-21 radial engine, flew on 31 August 1947. The second prototype was fitted with a more powerful Shvetsov ASh-62 engine, which allowed the aircraft's payload to be significantly...

Book Description
8 1/2 x 11, 220 color and b&w photosInitially criticized as 'obsolete at the moment of birth' due to its biplane layout, this aircraft has put the skeptics to shame. It may lack the glamour of the fast jets, but it has proved itself time and time again as an indispensable and long-serving workhorse. In terms of longevity and sheer numbers built, the Annushka (Annie), as the An-2 was affectionately known, has few parallels. Indeed, limited production of this aircraft, which first flew in 1947, still continues in China and Poland. The An-2 is a very robust and easy-to-fly aircraft. This and its excellent field performance (thanks to the 'obsolete biplane layout'!) have made it an ideal aircraft for utility operations from tiny semi-prepared strips, a fact which many air forces, the type has been operated by more than 40 nations, have put to good use. The An-2 is experiencing a revival now. In the mid-1970s the Antonov Design Bureau brought out the An-3, a turboprop-engined version of the Annushka. After nearly 20 years 'on ice', this design has been given a new lease of life as an upgrade program. This makes the An-2 the only biplane transport which remained in service long enough to pass into the 21st century!

Antonov's Heavy Transports

Antonov's Heavy Transports PDF Author: Yefim Gordon
Publisher: Schiffer Military History
ISBN: 9780764360718
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
This book charts the development and service history of the Antonov design bureau's heavy transport aircraft. In the late 1950s, the Antonov design bureau began developing the An-22 heavy military transport, intended to carry 50 tons. Powered by four 15,000 hp turboprops, it was the world's heaviest transport when it first flew in February 1965. The four-turbofan An-124 was again the world's most capable airlifter when it emerged in 1982, with a payload of 120 tons. It proved its worth in military and humanitarian operations and earned acclaim as a commercial freighter after 1991 for carrying heavy and outsized items. The unique six-engined An-225 "Mriya" was created for carrying the Buran space shuttle. Despite the demise of the Buran program, the aircraft found use on the heavy/outsized cargo transportation market. It is illustrated by a wealth of new photos and color artwork, as well as line drawings.â

Soviet Aircraft Industry

Soviet Aircraft Industry PDF Author: Peter G Dancey
Publisher: Fonthill Media
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 333

Book Description
Soviet aircraft industry was an essential part of the USSR’s campaign for global dominance in the twentieth century. Thanks to the thick fog of secrecy that enveloped it throughout the Cold War, it has long inspired the fascination of analysts and enthusiasts in the West; until the collapse of the USSR in 1991, details of Soviet aircraft were often a matter of conjecture. This book aims to uncover fully the mystery surrounding this topic. Drawing on original and previously unpublished information obtained directly from the former USSR, Soviet Aircraft Industry examines the unique characteristics of Soviet-designed aircraft—particularly military types, which were the cause of great concern to the West. Further, by virtue of the industry’s central role throughout Soviet history, this book provides a rare and important perspective into the broader theme of Russia’s great communist experiment.

Book Description
Without the support of airlift, the modern American military machine would be brought to a standstill. Since World War II--beginning with the Cold War and continuing up to the present day--the U.S. armed forces have come increasingly to rely upon airlift for mobility. The power to rapidly move and thereafter support a military operation--anywhere in the world, at any time--has become a foundational element of American defense policy. This work provides the reader with a comprehensive historical survey--including technical specifications, drawings, and photographs--of each type of fixed-wing aircraft used by U.S. military forces over a nearly 90-year period to carry out the airlift mission.
