Book Description
Excerpt from San Antonio To the Texan, proud of his native State, no single thing in all the glory of its accomplishment, but pales before the lustre - the heroism, the patri otic fire which animated those wonderful martyrs of Texas independence who went to their doom within the walls of the Alamo. History tells of the messengers who fled from bloody Thermopylae crying the tidings of defeat, but history tells us also, that when the smoke of contest cleared from the walls of the Mission Ala mo - life had gone with the mists of battle and the heroic defenders gazed towards the blue heavens with eyes that saw not and ears no longer attuned to the melodies of Earth - all, all were dead. Book Description
Excerpt from San Antonio, Historical and Modern Out of the mystic West Apache warriors traveled across the Staked Plains to and the traditional hunting grounds of their fore-fathers, - a land of bison and limpid water. The way was long and tedious, with hunger and thirst ever in hot pursuit. Thus it was the "moon of dead leaves" before the remnant of the Apache band found the pass. It was the year of the great drought. Mountain, mesa and plain stood abandoned by the spirit of nature. The brown earth bore no sign save the mystic sand paintings, symbolic prayers of the medicine men to the forces of nature. War painted, sinewy bodies shown against the golden sunset at the road where the tepees had been reared, but no smoke ascended, nor welcome awaited, for the medicine men chanted only of famine. Ravenous wolves howled of hunger, and the turtle doves mingled their sad notes with the dirges of the women. Tremanos, a youth of the Apache tribe, ascended wearily to a hill top. He turned to the mesa; red phantoms blurred the horizon, while from over the mountain the hot breeze brought rythmical music from the flageolet of a spirit warrior. To the west, the lurid sunset mocked, as a burning tomahawk, over the land of his fathers. Gaunt shadows, grim death, wierd sounds stood whispering as Tremanos looked southward where gray billows of sage brush reached onward to infinite space. But, a miracle - beyond the gray, a bit of fern-like green seemed to follow the valley. Tremanos called, "Come, my people, come: it is the river: Water and bison await us. Follow my footsteps to Tejas the Beautiful." Silently wigwams were folded by half hearted squaws. Onward for hours they journeyed, to the great bend of the Hill of Laurel; there, eastward and southward high tula grass marked the water course. Gaunt faces were transmuted, gaunt hands were lifted in prayer to the forces of nature, gaunt bodies bowed over the ford of Las Tejas. Doctor Antonio (Classic Reprint)

Doctor Antonio (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: John Ruffini

Book Description
Excerpt from Doctor Antonio On a fine sunny afternoon of early April, in the year 1840, an elegant travelling carriage was rattling, at the full speed of four post-horses, over the road, famous among tourists as the Cornice Road, and which runs along the western Riviera of Genoa, from that city to Nice. Few of the public highways of Europe are more favoured than this - few, at any rate, combine in themselves three such elements of natural beauty as the Mediterranean on one side, the Apennines on the other, and overhead the splendours of an Italian sky. The industry of man has done what it could, if not to vie with, at least not to disparage Nature. Numerous towns and villages, some gracefully seated on the shore, bathing their feet in the silvery wave, some stretching up the mountain sides like a flock of sheep, or thrown picturesquely astride a lofty ridge, with here and there a solitary sanctuary perched high on a sea-washed cliff, or half lost in a forest of verdure at the head of some glen; marble palaces and painted villas emerging from sunny vineyards, gaily flowering gardens, or groves of orange and lemon trees; myriads of white casini with green jalousies scattered all over hills, once sterile, but now, their scanty soil propped up by terrace shelving above terrace, clothed to the top with olive-trees, - all and everything, in short, of man's handiwork, betokens the activity and ingenuity of a tasteful and richly-endowed race. Book Description
Excerpt from Romantic San Antonio HE charm of an old city lies chiefly around the historic spots and buildings in which the romance of its early history is centered. Rarely do we enter a city that can boast of ancient edifices and haloed ground, the history of which is known the country over. Rarer still is the community, whose quaint buildings, picturesque scenes and romantic atmosphere is its main attraction, luring thousands to its gates each year. Such, however, is the boast of San Antonio, Texas, the quaintest, most lovable, ever-interesting and hospitable city in the United States. N o where else may you find such an appeal to the romantic and the picturesque, and have such hospitable welcome extended you, no where will you find such a blending of the ancient with the modern, as in this delightful city of our own Southwest. You may enter the city on several different lines and step at once into depots, designed to augment the atmosphere of quaintness which pervades the whole city. One is a replica in part of the old mission gear by. Surrounded by desert and semi-tropical plants they give an impression almost foreign. Tall stately date-palms, Spanish daggers, giant cactus, banana trees, china berry and magnolias lend their beauty, weirdness and picturesque charm to this impression of some Latin com munity far removed from our bustling, ultra-modern American cities. You feel also, as you emerge from the depot, the letting down of the hurry and worry, the rush and excitement of your hitherto busy life and a sudden entrance into a restful, quiet, but altogether entrancing existence.
