Boisen also pioneered a therapeutic approach of "cooperative inquiry" - a kind of collaborative "research" by the patient and the therapist - working "side-by-side" - toward understanding an unusual experience. "Cooperative Inquiry in Religion" (1945) was one of the most thoughtful of Boisen's many, many articles in the fields of psychology, sociology, and theology. He emphasized that "Religious experience can and should be studied before it has gathered dust on library shelves" - and that "the living human documents" - sometimes being patients - "are the primary sources for the understanding of human nature".
