This book examines potential technologies for replacing antipersonnel landmines by 2006, the U.S. target date for signing an international treaty banning these weapons. Alternative Technologies to Replace Antipersonnel Landmines emphasizes the role that technology can play to allow certain weapons to be used more selectively, reducing the danger to uninvolved civilians while improving the effectiveness of the U.S. military. Landmines are an important weapon in the U.S. military's arsenal but the persistent variety can cause unintended casualties, to both civilians and friendly forces. New technologies could replace some, but not all, of the U.S. military's antipersonnel landmines by 2006. In the period following 2006, emerging technologies might eliminate the landmine totally, while retaining the necessary functionalities that today's mines provide to the military.

The Aerial Delivered Anti-Tank Mine was developed as a highly mobile weapon to exploit the potential of mine warfare in offensive-type operations. Aerial delivered mines are ideally suited for use beyond a beachhead perimeter or enemy front lines to prevent the enemy from bringing in heavy armor. The mine may be used in analytical situation, offensive or defensive, where it is desirable to deny enemy armor access to local areas. The mine incorporates provisions for non-destructive sterilization which may be preset for any predetermined time up to 10 days. This sterilization feature permits friendly armor to pass through the mined area after the mine has served its purpose. Improvement studies indicate that a maximum sterilization time of six months is highly feasible. It is also possible to provide friendly vehicles with inexpensive equipment which will permit safe passage of the mined area at any time. After separation from the delivery airplane the mine falls to earth and comes to rest beneath the surface in a near vertical position. The mine may be used in soils varying from wet clay to sand and hard packed soil surfaces. The depth of burial varies from 6 inches to 4 feet depending on the air drop and soil conditions.

Both anti-tank and anti-personnel land mines were used by the Axis and Allied powers during WWII. Designed to immobilize track or wheeled vehicles, anti-tank mines are normally employed in clusters known as mine fields. The typical charge of an anti-tank mine is six to twelve pounds. Usually they are not dangerous to personnel, since the heavy pressure or magnetic action produced by a vehicle is necessary to detonate them. Antipersonnel mines are used primarily to produce casualties to foot soldiers. They may be placed for specific tactical purposes, such as the protection of mine fields or other obstacles, on strategic ground, or in such a way as to provide local security; or they may be placed as nuisances that harass and delay the enemy's advance. With an explosive charge of a quarter pound to four pounds, this type of mine is not effective against armored vehicles. Created in 1943, this field manual covers the employment, types, and characteristics of land mines and booby traps of various nations. It includes methods to locate, disarm, defuse, and remove these obstacles. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.
