Substance abuse is pervasive among people involved in the criminal justice system. Two-thirds of arrestees, male and female, were found positive for at least one drug. The data indicates that the drug of choice among both male and female arrestees continues to be cocaine; the % using it is higher than for any other substance tested. Among male arrestees, the rate of cocaine use dropped slightly. Marijuana use continues to escalate among young male arrestees and the use of methamphetamine has risen in several western cities.
