Book Description
Pesticides are important in modern farming. Without them it would be difficult to produce enormous quantities of food that are required to feed people throughout the world. Our expectation of good quality fruit and vegetables supports the use of pesticides. The consumer now has the choice of avoiding pesticide residues, but at a price: organic food is more expensive to produce and supplies can be unpredictable. In order to ensure that pesticides are used correctly, and to provide information on the food supply, the Working Party on Pesticide Residues (WPPR) samples fruit, vegetables, cereals (including breads), meat and fish (a total of 3230 samples during 1995) and seeks residues of a broad array of pesticides (morre than 100 in some samples). Levels above the maximum residue level are followed up and the reasons for their occurence ascertained with a view to preventing further violation.
