The Bassoon Sonatas of Victor Bruns

Book Description
Sonata repertoire for bassoon and piano is rather narrow in scope and quantity when compared to sonata repertoire of other woodwind instruments. Outside of the sonatas for bassoon and piano of Etler, Hindemith, Hurlstone, Saint-Sẽns, and Wilder, works are relatively few and rarely played. Representative works from the mid-to-late twentieth century are often difficult even to locate. Fortunately, a substantial body of sonata repertoire lies in the three sonatas for bassoon and piano by Victor Bruns (1904-96). Bruns was one of many bassoonist-composers, most of whom were professors at the Paris Conservatory, who added to the relatively small amount of repertoire for the instrument, yet his works are relatively unknown. In addition to these three sonatas, Bruns composed music for bassoon including: four bassoon concerti, a contrabassoon concerto, three additional works for bassoon and piano, two pieces for contrabassoon and piano, numerous pedagogical etudes and studies, and chamber music in various genres. Bruns was a prolific composer of symphonic music, instrumental concerti, chamber music, and music for the stage. Unfortunately, the majority of his works are relatively unknown outside Germany and Eastern Europe, and many are out of print, sold in manuscript only or difficult to obtain. The purpose of this thesis is to provide, through a detailed examination of his three sonatas for bassoon and piano and an annotated bibliography of works for bassoon, an analytical and performance perspective of the unique compositional style of Victor Bruns.
