"Southern forests provide innumerable benefits. Forest scientists, managers, owners, and users have in common the desire to improve the condition of these forests and the ecosystems they support. Over most of this period the station's territory included Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, northern Georgia, eastern Kentucky, and eastern Tennessee. On July 1, 1946 the station name was changed to Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, and the station's territory was designated as Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
