The 17th congress of the Association Internationale pour l'Histoire du Verre (AIHV), held in Antwerp, Belgium from 4 to 8 September 2006, brought together scholars from all over the world specialized in the history of glass. AIHV is an international organisation whose membership spans the globe, from Los Angeles to Tokyo and from Helsinki to Adelaide. Since its creation 50 years ago, AIHV members have studied and reported on the extraordinary development of glass in all historical periods in the Annales of the AIHV. Next to containing numerous contributions on the use, manufacture and trade of glass in the Antique period, also the importance of glass in more recent historical periods, starting from the 15th century and ending in the 21st century, are dealt with in detail. For almost a millennium, a modest wooden ship lay underwater off the coast of Serçe Limani, Turkey, filled with evidence of trade and objects of daily life. The ship, now excavated by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University, trafficked in both the Byzantine and Islamic worlds of its time. Known as "the Glass Wreck," it bore cargo that included three metric tons of glass cullet, including broken Islamic vessels and eighty pieces of intact glassware, along with various artifacts of ship life. This second volume of the discovery’s investigation focuses on the excavation, conservation, and study of the glass found in the wreckage. The extensive catalog will be a valuable tool for archaeologists and scholars of Islamic glass and Islamic trade. Glass of the Roman World illustrates the arrival of new cultural systems, mechanisms of trade and an expanded economic base in the early 1st millennium AD which, in combination, allowed the further development of the existing glass industry. In September 2002, a second workshop on the theme of the social context of technological change was held at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, University of Cambridge. Discussion has been the core of these meetings so far, with the aim being to relate the results of the specialist investigator to broad historical questions concerning the nature and development of ancient societies. The papers presented here address a wider context: geographically, with the inclusion of the Aegean and thematically, with papers on natural products and raw materials. The time frame remains the same in covering the Late Bronze Age/New Kingdom.
