A Century of Geography at Stellenbosch University 1920-2020

A Century of Geography at Stellenbosch University 1920-2020 PDF Author: Gustav Visser
Publisher: African Sun Media
ISBN: 1928480748
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
A Century of Geography at Stellenbosch University 1920-2020 focuses on the establishment and development of geography as an academic discipline at Stellenbosch, South Africa’s founding geography department. The ways in which the department currently operates are deemed fundamentally joined to its past and pave the way for the evolution of geography and its various subdisciplines going forward. The investigation seeks to highlight the development of the discipline and its institutionalisation as part of the academic offerings of the university, while providing details about the teaching and research conducted, as well as of the people who contributed to these endeavours. It also furnishes the academic geography community at Stellenbosch, and geography more broadly, with some insights into its past development and more recent changes, along with a complete bibliography of conducted research.

Fault Lines

Fault Lines PDF Author: Jonathan Jansen
Publisher: AFRICAN SUN MeDIA
ISBN: 1928480497
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
What is the link, if any, between race and disease? How did the term baster as ‘mixed race’ come to be mistranslated from ‘incest’ in the Hebrew Bible? What are the roots of racial thinking in South African universities? How does music fall on the ear of black and white listeners? Are new developments in genetics simply a backdoor for the return of eugenics? For the first time, leading scholars in South Africa from different disciplines take on some of these difficult questions about race, science and society in the aftermath of apartheid. This book offers an important foundation for students pursuing a broader education than what a typical degree provides, and a must-read resource for every citizen concerned about the lingering effects of race and racism in South Africa and other parts of the world.

Description and Measurement of Bilingualism

Description and Measurement of Bilingualism PDF Author: Louis G. Kelly
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487590768
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 489

Book Description
In June 1967 the Canadian National Commission for Unesco and the Université de Moncton jointly sponsored an international seminar on bilingualism. Although 1967 was Canada's centennial year, the seminar was concerned only incidentally with bilingualism in Canada. Instead, bilingualism was considered as the essential element in communication between language irrespective of national boundaries. Participants included linguists, psychologists, and sociologists. The report shows that the interdisciplinary discussions carried on at Moncton were fruitful; that significant questions about bilingualism were raised and an improvement in communication between specialists from different traditions, languages, and cultures were effected. This volumes makes a valuable contribution toward establishing a general theory of bilingualism.

The Anxieties of White Supremacy

The Anxieties of White Supremacy PDF Author: Christoph Marx
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 3110787350
Category : History

Pages : 580

Book Description
Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd (1958–1966) is widely regarded as the mastermind of apartheid in South Africa. This study examines how he developed the ideology of racial separation into a comprehensive system. It also looks into Verwoerd’s intellectual development and his academic career before he entered politics. Apartheid was to Verwoerd less a defense of colonialism but a policy for the future, he was an authoritarian modernizer and a true representative of the Age of Extremes.
