Book Description
The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne (1789) is a novel by Ann Radcliffe. Published anonymously, Radcliffe’s debut novel is a tragic story of love and murder set in the sublime landscape of the Scottish Highlands. Considered an essential work of Gothic fiction, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne is an early example of her prowess as a leading novelist of suspense and the supernatural. “This pile was venerable from its antiquity, and from its Gothic structure; but more venerable from the virtues which it enclosed. It was the residence of the still beautiful widow, and the children of the noble Earl of Athlin, who was slain by the hand of Malcolm, a neighbouring chief, proud, oppressive, revengeful; and still residing in all the pomp of feudal greatness, within a few miles of the castle of Athlin.” Raised in isolation in the high Castle of Athlin, Osbert and Mary have never known the rituals inherent to public life. As heirs to a once-mighty clan, they are haunted by the weight of their dead father’s legacy, shattered by his murderer Malcolm of Dunbayne. As sadness turns to rage, Osbert swears an oath to avenge his father, wandering off into the deep wilderness of the Highlands in search of men to aid him in his quest. Together with his clansmen and the peasant Alleyn, he launches an assault on Malcolm’s castle, risking everything to reclaim his honor. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Ann Radcliffe’s The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne is a classic of English literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book Description
The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne, a tale of two warring Highland clans, was Radcliffe's first novel. Sir Walter Scott wrote of it, "We can now trace some germs of that taste and talent for the wild, romantic and mysterious, which the authoress afterwards employed with such effect." One of the qualities that Mrs. Radcliffe possessed that made her so popular around the world was her ability to create poetic descriptions of the scenery in countries that she had never visited. Keats tweaked Radcliffian attitudes when he wrote to a friend, "I'll tip you a Damosel Radcliffe. I'll cavern you and grotto you and waterfall you and immense-rock you and solitude you." Byron quipped in a letter, "I am going out this evening in my Cloak and Gondola-here are two nice Mrs. Radcliffe words for you."

Book Description
The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne. A Highland Story is a gothic novel by Ann Radcliffe first published in London by Thomas Hookham in 1789.The novel is a set in a powerful landscape which became familiar in her later work, with complex clan feuds and mysterious romantic intrigues played out against a backdrop of ruined medieval castles and rugged Scottish coastlines. Each of the characters can be defined by their passions: The present Earl of Athlin, Osbert, is driven by a passionate desire to avenge his father's murder at the hand of Malcolm, the Baron of Dunbayne. His sister, Mary, is ever swooning and fainting in an attempt to resist her passion for Alleyn, a highlander not of noble birth (and therefore unworthy). Alleyn is likwise driven to heroic deeds of rescue because of his love for Mary. Even the villain, Baron Malcolm, is driven by his desire-first a desire to kill Osbert; it is later supplanted by his desire to possess Mary. Although the passions of its leading characters dominate the plot, the castles of the title are as central to the narrative, establishing an enduring Gothic trope.
