International Mechanisms for the Control and Responsible Use of Alien Species in Aquatic Ecosystems
Author: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Publisher: Food & Agriculture Org.
ISBN: 9789251053683
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
The use of alien species is a proven means to increase production and value from aquatic ecosystems. In the Mekong/Lanchang basin, alien species such as tilapia (Orechromis spp.) play an important role in providing cheap and readily available protein to rural and poor sectors. However, alien species are now recognized as one of the most significant threats to aquatic biodiversity. Several steps are necessary for effective use and control of alien species, but one of the most important was identified to be following codes of practice similar to that developed by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea.

Invasive Alien Species
Author: NOBANIS
Publisher: Nordic Council of Ministers
ISBN: 9289339845
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
Invasive alien species are one of the main drivers of biodiversity loss, due to their ability to disperse and cause negative effects on native species and the environment. To reduce the introduction of invasive alien species in the future, preventive measures need to be implemented, and knowledge about pathways of introduction of new and potentially invasive alien species can facilitate tailor-made measures. The aim of this project is to contribute to the fulfilment of obligations in the CBD Aichi target 9 and the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2020 target 5, by identifying and prioritising the most significant pathways of introduction for invasive alien species by conducting a pathway analysis and horizon scanning. This identification and prioritisation is done for 10 participating countries and territories part of the NOBANIS network to assist them in minimising and preventing further introductions and establishment of invasive alien species. Based on the results from the pathway analysis and horizon scanning, this report presents a prioritised list of pathways of interest, general recommendations on measures to control pathways of interest, and advice on development of an early warning system for invasive alien species.

Wildlife law

Pages : 72
Book Description
It is clear that invasive non-native species pose a significant threat to both biodiversity and the economy. It is equally clear that it is important to seek to eradicate, or otherwise manage, invasive on-native species swiftly and effectively: proposed EU legislation and existing international obligations highlight the need for early eradication when preventive measures have failed. The species control order recommendations set out in this report seek to fill a gap in the current law of England and Wales. At present there is no mechanism to compel an owner or occupier of premises or land to control invasive non-native species or to take or to take control measures without an owner or occupier's consent. Consultation has confirmed the views of the Law Commission on the desirability of such a mechanism
