Love Letters from a Voluptuous Sexagenarian
Author: Miguel Delibes
Publisher: Juan de la Cuesta-Hispanic Monographs
ISBN: 9781588713032
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
Miguel Delibes Love Letters from a Voluptuous Sexagenarian Translated by Teresa Boucher Miguel Delibes (1920-2010) was born and died in Valladolid, Spain. He was a novelist, journalist, newspaper editor, professor, and father of seven. He won virtually every literary prize awarded in Spain from the Nadal Prize for his first novel in 1948 to the Cervantes Prize in 1993 to the National Prize for Narrative for his last novel in 1999. In 1973 he was elected to the Royal Spanish Academy. He delivered his inaugural address in 1975, his wife having died in the interim. Delibes is the author of twenty novels and numerous collections of short stories and essays. Nine of his novels have been adapted to film, one to theater, and one to television. To date, eleven of his works have been translated into English. Love Letter from a Voluptuous Sexagenarian is the first English translation of Cartas de amor de un sexagenario voluptuoso, originally published in 1983. This novel has already been translated into Bosnian, Hebrew, Japanese and Russian--but only now into English. In Love Letters from a Voluptuous Sexagenarian, our antihero, Eugenio Sanz Vecilla, a sixty-five-year-old retired Castilian newspaperman, reads a personal ad in Sentimental Correspondence while in the waiting room of a doctor's office. Thus begins a six-month exchange of letters with Roc o, a fifty-six-year-old widow from Seville whose son, Federico, is writing a graduate thesis on censorship of the press in the 1940s under Francisco Franco's dictatorship. This novel, an epistolary mono-dialogue, weaves a comic love story with an unwitting expos of the state of journalism under an authoritarian regime. *** Teresa Boucher holds the Ph.D. from Princeton University in Romance Languages and Literatures. She is professor of Spanish at Boise State University. She has published articles, book reviews, and a monograph on Miguel Delibes.

Basques in the Philippines
Author: Marciano R. De Borja
Publisher: University of Nevada Press
ISBN: 0874178916
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 408
Book Description
The Basques played a remarkably influential role in the creation and maintenance of Spain’s colonial establishment in the Philippines. Their skills as shipbuilders and businessmen, their evangelical zeal, and their ethnic cohesion and work-oriented culture made them successful as explorers, colonial administrators, missionaries, merchants, and settlers. They continued to play prominent roles in the governance and economy of the archipelago until the end of Spanish sovereignty, and their descendants still contribute in significant ways to the culture and economy of the contemporary Philippines. This book offers important new information about a little-known aspect of Philippine history and the influence of Basque immigration in the Spanish Empire, and it fills an important void in the literature of the Basque diaspora.

Emotion and the Arts
Author: Mette Hjort
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0195354915
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 311
Book Description
The only work of its kind, this exciting collection assembles a number of analytically minded philosophers, psychologists, and literary theorists, all of whom seek to provide fine-grained accounts of critical problems having to do with emotion and art. How best to explain emotions produced by works of art? What goes on when we feel emotion for an abstract art such as music? How is it that we can intelligibly feel emotion for persons and situations that we know are fictional? What is involved in our empathic experience of negative emotion through the art of tragedy? A strongly interdisciplinary volume that captures the richness of current debates about the role of agency in human emotional response, this collection also considers the influence of culture on emotion and demonstrates that cognitivist and social- constructivist perspectives need not be antagonistic and may actually work together in a complementary way. Essays cluster under four rubrics--"The Paradox of Fiction", "Emotion and its Expression through Art", "The Rationality of Emotional Responses to Art", and "The Value of Emotion"--and together they address questions of emotion in film, painting, music, dance, literature, and theater. With new work by leading thinkers in the field of aesthetics, and drawing upon state of the art scholarship from areas such as cognitive science, literary studies, and contemporary ethics, Emotion and the Arts is essential reading for those who study aesthetics, literature, theories of emotion, and the mind.
