The Constitutive A Priori

The Constitutive A Priori PDF Author: Arthur Sullivan
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 1498547125
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 203

Book Description
The question of the a priori—can an adequate epistemology be developed without appeal to a non-empirical source of justification?—is a core issue running throughout the history of philosophy, and recent decades have seen some provocative and potentially epochal work on the issue. Arthur Sullivan provides a clear-headed evaluation of the upshot of these developments. He argues that the notion of the constitutive a priori provides the best means, all things considered, of accommodating these recent developments into a coherent, compelling view. The constitutive a priori is most commonly known as a position within the philosophy of science, holding that one of Kant’s signature moves provides the means to incorporate unforeseen drastic shocks into existing theory. This book shows that this notion of the constitutive a priori provides not merely a satisfactory epistemological framework, but, further, a compelling way to accommodate and integrate some of the most significant lessons learned in twentieth century philosophy. Its distinctive contribution lies in the case it builds for taking this constitutive a priori orientation as a good means of integrating and consolidating certain epochal insights of Wittgenstein, Carnap, Quine, Kripke, and Kaplan.

Debating the A Priori

Debating the A Priori PDF Author: Paul Boghossian
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192592548
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
What kind of knowledge could be obtainable just by thinking? Debating the A Priori presents a series of exchanges between two leading philosophers on how to answer this question. In this extended debate, Boghossian and Williamson contribute alternating chapters which develop radically contrasting views and present detailed replies to each other's arguments. A central case is the nature of basic logical knowledge and the justification for basic deductive inferences, but the arguments range widely across epistemology, the philosophy of language, and metaphilosophy. The debate takes in the status of the distinctions between analytic and synthetic and between a priori and a posteriori, as well as problems concerning the conditions for linguistic understanding and competence, and the question of what it might be to grasp a concept or to have an intuition. Both authors explore implications for how philosophy itself works, or should work. The result vividly exposes some of the main fault lines in contemporary philosophy, concerning the relation between reason and experience, the status of basic beliefs, the nature of concepts and intuitions, the role of language in our understanding of the world, how to study knowledge, and what it is to do philosophy. Both authors provide conclusions which sum up their positions and place the arguments in context. Their lively and engaging exchanges allow the reader to follow up-close how a philosophical debatte evolves.

Models, Methods, Concepts & Applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process

Models, Methods, Concepts & Applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process PDF Author: Thomas L. Saaty
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461435978
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 342

Book Description
The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is a prominent and powerful tool for making decisions in situations involving multiple objectives. Models, Methods, Concepts and Applications of the Analytic Hierarchy Process, 2nd Edition applies the AHP in order to solve problems focused on the following three themes: economics, the social sciences, and the linking of measurement with human values. For economists, the AHP offers a substantially different approach to dealing with economic problems through ratio scales. Psychologists and political scientists can use the methodology to quantify and derive measurements for intangibles. Meanwhile researchers in the physical and engineering sciences can apply the AHP methods to help resolve the conflicts between hard measurement data and human values. Throughout the book, each of these topics is explored utilizing real life models and examples, relevant to problems in today’s society. This new edition has been updated and includes five new chapters that includes discussions of the following: - The eigenvector and why it is necessary - A summary of ongoing research in the Middle East that brings together Israeli and Palestinian scholars to develop concessions from both parties - A look at the Medicare Crisis and how AHP can be used to understand the problems and help develop ideas to solve them.

Philosophical Papers: Volume 3, Realism and Reason

Philosophical Papers: Volume 3, Realism and Reason PDF Author: Hilary Putnam
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521313940
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
This is the third volume of Hilary Putnam's philosophical papers, published in paperback for the first time. The volume contains his major essays from 1975 to 1982, which reveal a large shift in emphasis in the 'realist' position developed in his earlier work. While not renouncing those views, Professor Putnam has continued to explore their epistemological consequences and conceptual history. He now, crucially, sees theories of truth and of meaning that derive from a firm notion of reference as inadequate.

Reconsidering Policy

Reconsidering Policy PDF Author: Crowley, Kate
Publisher: Policy Press
ISBN: 144733311X
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
For nation-states, the contexts for developing and implementing policy have become more complex and demanding. Yet policy studies have not fully responded to the challenges and opportunities represented by these developments. Governance literature has drawn attention to a globalising and network-based policy world, but politics and the role of the state have been de-emphasised. This book addresses this imbalance by reconsidering traditional policy-analytic concepts, and re-developing and extending new ones, in a melded approach defined as systemic institutionalism. This links policy with governance and the state and suggests how real-world issues might be substantively addressed.

Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials Using ANSYS®, Second Edition

Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials Using ANSYS®, Second Edition PDF Author: Ever J. Barbero
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1466516895
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 369

Book Description
Designing structures using composite materials poses unique challenges, especially due to the need for concurrent design of both material and structure. Students are faced with two options: textbooks that teach the theory of advanced mechanics of composites, but lack computational examples of advanced analysis, and books on finite element analysis that may or may not demonstrate very limited applications to composites. But there is a third option that makes the other two obsolete: Ever J. Barbero's Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials Using ANSYS®, Second Edition. The Only Finite Element Analysis Book on the Market Using ANSYS to Analyze Composite Materials. By layering detailed theoretical and conceptual discussions with fully developed examples, this text supplies the missing link between theory and implementation. In-depth discussions cover all of the major aspects of advanced analysis, including three-dimensional effects, viscoelasticity, edge effects, elastic instability, damage, and delamination. This second edition of the bestseller has been completely revised to incorporate advances in the state of the art in such areas as modeling of damage in composites. In addition, all 50+ worked examples have been updated to reflect the newest version of ANSYS. Including some use of MATLAB®, these examples demonstrate how to use the concepts to formulate and execute finite element analyses and how to interpret the results in engineering terms. Additionally, the source code for each example is available to students for download online via a companion website featuring a special area reserved for instructors. Plus a solutions manual is available for qualifying course adoptions. Cementing applied computational and analytical experience to a firm foundation of basic concepts and theory, Finite Element Analysis of Composite Materials Using ANSYS, Second Edition offers a modern, practical, and versatile classroom tool for today's engineering classroom.
