The Viscous Incompressible Flow Past a Circular Cylinder at Moderate Reynolds Numbers
Author: Robert Leigh Underwood
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Boundary layer
Languages : en
Pages : 112
Book Description
An accurate description of the flow field about a cylinder is found possible with a semi-analytical solution of the full Navier-Stokes equations. The method of series truncation is employed to reduce the governing partial differential equations of motion to a system of ordinary differential equations which can be integrated numerically. This method, which has been applied to the hypersonic blunt-body problem by previous investigators with great success, is essentially a successive-approximation procedure which treats an elliptic partial differential equation as if it were parabolic or hyperbolic. The dependent variable is expanded in one co-ordinate, and backward influence in the resultant system of ordinary differential equations is prevented by series curtailment. Results are given for Reynolds numbers between 0.4 and 10.0 (based on diameter); however, the method can be applied to both higher and lower Reynolds numbers without modification. An accurate prediction of the Reynolds number at which separation first occurs behind the circular cylinder is made; this separation Reynolds number is found to be 5.75. Over the entire Reynolds-number range investigated, characteristic flow parameters such as the drag coefficient, pressure coefficient, standing-eddy length, and streamline pattern compare favorably with available experimental data and numerical-solution results. It is concluded that the semi-analytical method of series truncation permits accurate determination of the flow field about a circular cylinder at moderate Reynolds numbers without resorting either to full-numerical solution or to experiment. Steady Laminar Flow Past a Circular Cylinder at High Reynolds Number
Numerical Simulations and Control of the Flow Past a Circular Cylinder
Author: Mingqing Xiao
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Cylinders
Languages : en
Pages : 14
Book Description
A numerical method for a finite difference approach has been established for the analysis and control of the fluid behavior of flow past a cylinder. The discretization of the 2D Navier-Stokes equations is done over a staggered grid, convective terms in the momentum equations are handled using a mixture of central differences and donor-cell discretization, and the Poisson equations for the pressure is solved through the successive overrelaxation (SOR) method. We also study some open-loop and closed-loop control of the flow field by rotating the cylinder. For the open-loop design, we mainly make use of the energy method, and for the feedback design both the energy method and the phase method are applied.

Bluff-Body Wakes, Dynamics and Instabilities
Author: Helmut Eckelmann
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9783662004159
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 364
Book Description
Bluff-body wakes play an important role in many fluid dynamics problems and engineering applications. This book gives and up-to-date account of recent results obtained in the study of bluff-body wakes. Experimental, theoretical and numerical approaches are all comprehensively covered and compared. Topics of particular interest include hydrodynamic instability analyses, three-dimensional pattern formation problems, flow control methods, bifurcation analyses, numerical simulations and turbulence modelling. The main originality of thisvolume is that recent conceptual advances made to describe nonlinear phenomena in general are put to the test on a classical problem in fundamental fluid mechanics, namely the wake structure generated behind a bluff object.

A Numerical Study of Steady Viscous Flow Past a Finite Number of Circular Cylinders at Low Reynolds Numbers
Hydrodynamics Around Cylindrical Structures
Author: Jorgen Fredsoe
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 981449805X
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 550
Book Description
This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.
