Errors are information. In contrastive linguistics, they are thought to be caused by unconscious transfer of mother tongue structures to the system of the target language and give information about both systems. In the interlanguage hypothesis of second language acquisition, errors are indicative of the different intermediate learning levels and are useful pedagogical feedback. In both cases error analysis is an essential methodological tool for diagnosis and evaluation of the language acquisition process. Although the rise in the popularity of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) since the 1960s has directed attention away from accuracy and onto fluency and meaning, most Japanese learners of English still expect to receive corrections on both their written and spoken output. Due largely to interference from Japanese language and culture, as well as over-generalization of English grammatical rules, Japanese learners of English tend to make the same kinds of mistakes over and over again. This taxonomy of the most common and persistent mistakes is therefore offered as a useful timesaving tool, as well as a more targeted treatment than most general grammar books.This list of 50 mistakes is based on the author's experience of over 10 years teaching English in both conversation schools and institutes of higher education in Japan. Note that not all the sentences are technically "grammatically" incorrect, but rather relate to "unnatural" uses of English according to the author's intuition. Proponents of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) tend to argue that native speakers no longer have ownership of the English language, and that the norms they espouse should be disregarded in favor of non-native speaker norms. The author is inclined to agree with the former sentiment (global ownership of English) more than the latter (disregarding the norms of native speakers). In the absence of a standard global variety of non-native speaker English, native speaker norms are still the best thing we have. Further objections to this kind of book on common mistakes might be raised by descriptive grammarians, who deem the way language is actually used (usually by native speakers) to be the final authority on what is acceptable. While descriptivists tend to dismiss the importance of grammar rules, prescriptivists are usually strongly in favor of applying them, especially in academic contexts. While both sides of this debate have something to offer, it is often more helpful to be a pragmatist. We should acknowledge the fact that gatekeepers (exam markers, journal vetters, book editors, teachers, etc) will ordinarily enforce commonly accepted linguistic standards, and it doesn't help learners of English as a Foreign Language to be told that there are no such standards, or that their own variety of English should be considered correct.This book is therefore offered to both teachers and learners of EFL in Japan as a pragmatic tool to help learners understand and avoid the most common mistakes and unnatural uses of English.
