Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Fracture Behaviour of Heterogeneous Welded Structures

Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Fracture Behaviour of Heterogeneous Welded Structures PDF Author: Drazan Kozak
Publisher: Mdpi AG
ISBN: 9783036534626
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 182

Book Description
In this book, modern trends in testing and simulating heterogeneous welded joints, including multi-scale approaches, resulting in appropriate flaw assessment procedures, are highlighted and discussed. The eleven research papers presented in this book give some overview of recent analytical, numerical, and experimental investigations in the field of yield strength mismatched welded joint behaviour. The papers cover several important issues to more accurately characterise the fracture mechanics behaviour and structural integrity assessments.

Effect of Weld Metal Mismatch on Joint Efficiency and Measured Fracture Toughness

Effect of Weld Metal Mismatch on Joint Efficiency and Measured Fracture Toughness PDF Author: L. Malik
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Fracture mechanics
Languages : en
Pages : 19

Book Description
Fracture toughness tests of deep-notched and shallow-notched SENB specimens at various sub-zero temperatures were conducted to study the effect of weld metal mismatch on measured fracture toughness. Tensile tests of cross-weld tensile specimens were also conducted to study the effect of weld metal mismatch on joint efficiency. These specimens were machined from butt welds that were fabricated with the same welding consumable and welding procedure using HSLA 100 steel plates heat treated to different tensile strengths. No significant differences were found between the joint efficiencies and ductilities of the cross-weld tensile specimens with overmatching weld metal and those of specimens with up to 9% weld metal undermatch in terms of yield strength (3% in terms of ultimate tensile strength). Furthermore, 100% joint efficiency was still achieved in the cross-weld tensile specimens with intact reinforcements and 17% undermatching weld metal in terms of yield strength (9% in terms of ultimate tensile strength). No correlation was found between the degree of weld metal mismatch and the measured fracture toughness of the SENB specimens.

Fatigue and Fracture of Weldments

Fatigue and Fracture of Weldments PDF Author: Uwe Zerbst
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030040739
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 174

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive and thorough guide to those readers who are lost in the often-confusing context of weld fatigue. It presents straightforward information on the fracture mechanics and material background of weld fatigue, starting with fatigue crack initiation and short cracks, before moving on to long cracks, crack closure, crack growth and threshold, residual stress, stress concentration, the stress intensity factor, J-integral, multiple cracks, weld geometries and defects, microstructural parameters including HAZ, and cyclic stress-strain behavior. The book treats all of these essential and mutually interacting parameters using a unique form of analysis.

Fracture and Fatigue of Welded Joints and Structures

Fracture and Fatigue of Welded Joints and Structures PDF Author: K Macdonald
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0857092502
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 353

Book Description
The failure of any welded joint is at best inconvenient and at worst can lead to catastrophic accidents. Fracture and fatigue of welded joints and structures analyses the processes and causes of fracture and fatigue, focusing on how the failure of welded joints and structures can be predicted and minimised in the design process.Part one concentrates on analysing fracture of welded joints and structures, with chapters on constraint-based fracture mechanics for predicting joint failure, fracture assessment methods and the use of fracture mechanics in the fatigue analysis of welded joints. In part two, the emphasis shifts to fatigue, and chapters focus on a variety of aspects of fatigue analysis including assessment of local stresses in welded joints, fatigue design rules for welded structures, k-nodes for offshore structures and modelling residual stresses in predicting the service life of structures. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Fracture and fatigue of welded joints and structures is an essential reference for mechanical, structural and welding engineers, as well as those in the academic sector with a research interest in the field. - Analyses the processes and causes of fracture and fatigue, focusing predicting and minimising the failure of welded joints in the design process - Assesses the fracture of welded joints and structure featuring constraint-based fracture mechanics for predicting joint failure - Explores specific considerations in fatigue analysis including the assessment of local stresses in welded joints and fatigue design rules for welded structures
