Book Description
The causes of rural/urban educational inequalities are multiple and diverse, and their analysis requires multi-disciplinary, longitudinal research. In this Polish study, preliminary examination of macrostatistical data on rural/urban disparities revealed the limitations of dichotomous analysis. In a broad, in-depth approach designed to develop a realistic continuum of community types, researchers lived and worked in two field research stations for 2- to 3-year periods, and a network of 49 teachers and correspondents provided data from their village schools. In total, data about 7,000 students were investigated over a 12-year period. The results demonstrate the interrelationships among educational inequalities and social inequalities. They also demonstrate the need to analyze inequalities on national, regional, and local levels. The study includes 38 statistical tables, 7 diagrams and graphs, 9 maps, an appendix outlining the principles of point setting in formulating starting and achievement level indices, and a selected bibliography containing 19 Polish, 4 French, and 8 English items. Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 147552577X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 51
Book Description
This paper discusses key issues related to the economy of Poland. Thanks to its sound policies, close links to the German supply chain, and substantial EU transfers, Poland is the only country in the European Union that avoided an outright recession during the global financial crisis. However, this strong performance has masked enduring regional disparities, which are undermining the quality of growth. Poland faces significant long-term challenges as an aging population weighs on potential growth and public finances. The new government, which took office in November, has approved a Responsible Development Plan, focused on spurring growth through innovation and reducing social and regional disparities.

The Politics of English Second Language Writing Assessment in Global Contexts
Author: Todd Ruecker
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351603027
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
Reflecting the internationalization of the field of second language writing, this book focuses on political aspects and pedagogical issues of writing instruction and testing in a global context. High-stakes assessment impacts the lives of second language (L2) writers and their teachers around the world, be it the College English Test in China, Common Core-aligned assessments in the U.S., English proficiency tests in Poland, or the material conditions (such as access to technology, training, and other resources) affecting a classroom. With contributions from authors working in ten different countries in a variety of institutional contexts, the chapters examine the uses and abuses of various writing-related assessments, and the policies that determine their form and use. Representing a diverse range of contexts, methods, and disciplines, the authors jointly call for more equitable testing systems that consider the socioeconomic, psychometric, affective, institutional, and needs of all students who strive to gain access to education and employment opportunities related to English language proficiency.

Urban Mental Health
Author: Dinesh Bhugra
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0192527053
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 384
Book Description
Over the past fifty years we have seen an enormous demographic shift in the number of people migrating to urban areas, proliferated by factors such as industrialisation and globalisation. Urban migration has led to numerous societal stressors such as pollution, overcrowding, unemployment, and resource, which in turn has contributed to psychiatric disorders within urban spaces. Rates of mental illness, addictions, and violence are higher in urban areas and changes in social network systems and support have increased levels of social isolation and lack of social support. Part of the Oxford Cultural Psychiatry series, Urban Mental Health brings together international perspectives on urbanisation, its impacts on mental health, the nature of the built environment, and the dynamic nature of social engagement. Containing 24 chapters on key topics such as research challenges, adolescent mental health, and suicides in cities, this resource provides a refreshing look at the challenges faced by clinicians and mental health care professionals today. Emphasis is placed on findings from low- and middle-income countries where expansion is rapid and resources limited bridging the gap in research findings.
