Book Description
This report presents the analysis conducted on relating pavement performance or response measures and design considerations to specific pavement layers utilizing data contained in the Long-Term Pavement Performance Program National Information Management System. The goal of this research activity was to enhance implementation and use of the 1993 AASHTO Design Guide through improved materials characterizations. Specifically, the focus of this research activity was to identify the differences that exist between laboratory measured and backcalculated resilient moduli; determine the applicability of the C values, drainage coefficients, and relative damage factors that are included in the Design Guide; and provide procedures to adequately consider the seasonal variation of material properties as related to flexible pavement designs. Based on these results, design pamphlets have been prepared in support of the AASHTO Design Guide. These design pamphlets are documented and included in other reports. The results reported here form the basis and background for those design pamphlets.

Testing and Characterization of Asphalt Materials and Pavement Structures

Testing and Characterization of Asphalt Materials and Pavement Structures PDF Author: Kun Zhang
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319957899
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
This book presents new studies dealing with the attempts made by the scientists and practitioners to address contemporary issues in pavement engineering such as aging and modification of asphalt binders, performance evaluation of warm mix asphalt, and mechanical-based pavement structure analysis, etc.. Asphalt binder and mixture have been widely used to construct flexible pavements. Mechanical and Chemical characterizations of asphalt materials and integration of these properties into pavement structures and distresses analysis are of great importance to design a sustainable flexible pavement. This book includes discusses and new results dealing with these issues. Papers were selected from the 5th GeoChina International Conference 2018 – Civil Infrastructures Confronting Severe Weathers and Climate Changes: From Failure to Sustainability, held on July 23 to 25, 2018 in HangZhou, China.

Advances in Materials and Pavement Prediction

Advances in Materials and Pavement Prediction PDF Author: Eyad Masad
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 0429855796
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 879

Book Description
Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction contains the papers presented at the International Conference on Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction (AM3P, Doha, Qatar, 16- 18 April 2018). There has been an increasing emphasis internationally in the design and construction of sustainable pavement systems. Advances in Materials and Pavement Prediction reflects this development highlighting various approaches to predict pavement performance. The contributions discuss links and interactions between material characterization methods, empirical predictions, mechanistic modeling, and statistically-sound calibration and validation methods. There is also emphasis on comparisons between modeling results and observed performance. The topics of the book include (but are not limited to): • Experimental laboratory material characterization • Field measurements and in situ material characterization • Constitutive modeling and simulation • Innovative pavement materials and interface systems • Non-destructive measurement techniques • Surface characterization, tire-surface interaction, pavement noise • Pavement rehabilitation • Case studies Advances in Materials and Pavement Performance Prediction will be of interest to academics and engineers involved in pavement engineering.

LTPP

Pages : 16

Book Description
Established as part of the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and now managed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program faces a significant challenge. Over the past decade, the LTPP program has developed a solid knowledge base for understanding how pavements perform. Its challenge throughout its second decade is to build on this foundation--to further the understanding of why pavements perform as they do. To address this challenge, FHWA has initiated several efforts that require the support and active participation of the States and Provinces. The intent of this document is to describe the challenge the LTPP program faces and explain the efforts underway to address this challenge. This document is presented in the following sections: Introduction; The Challenge; Addressing the Challenge; Critical Issues; and Future Opportunities.

Long-term Pavement Performance Materials Characterization Program

Long-term Pavement Performance Materials Characterization Program PDF Author: Jonathan L. Groeger
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Road materials
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
This document describes a procedure for verifying a dynamic testing system (closed-loop servohydraulic). The procedure is divided into three general phases: (1) electronic system performance verification, (2) calibration check and overall system performance verification, and (3) proficiency testing. This procedure may be used to evaluate a wide range of equipment and has applications to many test procedures. Implementation of this procedure in the Federal Highway Administration contractor laboratories has greatly reduced the within- and between-lab variability associated with the Long-Term Pavement Performance resilient modulus test procedures.

Long-Term Performance Program

Long-Term Performance Program PDF Author: R. G. Hicks
Publisher: ASCE Publications
ISBN: 9780784475010
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
Sponsored by the Highway Division of ASCE; Long-Term Performance Program of the Federal Highway Administration. This collection contains papers from the International Contest on LTPP [Long-Term Performance Program] Data Analysis 1998-1999. This competition involved university students in the analysis of data in the LTPP database. Topics include: effect of locked-in curvature on portland cement concrete pavement; evaluation of a pavement performance prediction model using LTPP data; prediction of pavement performance?a neural network approach; and effectiveness of preventative maintenance strategies for asphalt concrete pavements based on LTPP distress data.

Resilient Modulus Testing for Pavement Components

Resilient Modulus Testing for Pavement Components PDF Author: Mary Stroup-Gardiner
Publisher: ASTM International
ISBN: 0803134614
Category : Pavements
Languages : en
Pages : 274

Book Description
"Resilient modulus indicates the stiffness of a soil under controlled confinement conditions and repeated loading. The test is intended to simulate the stress conditions that occur in the base and subgrade of a pavement system. Resilient modulus has been adopted by the U.S. federal highway administration as the primary performance parameter for pavement design. We thank those who prepared these papers, the reviewers who provided anonymous peer reviews, and those who participated in the symposium. We hope this STP encourages more work to improve the testing standard and the value of the Resilient Modulus test."
