Excerpt from Chemical Study of Illinois Coals In the fifteen years which have intervened since the first study was made of the chemical composition and properties of the coals of the State, notable advancement has been made in methods of procedure in connection with such work. This result has naturally followed our increased knowledge and better understanding of the properties of this complex substance, but especially has it been caused by the marked changes which have occurred in the methods of purchasing coal, especially on the part of large consumers, whose contracts are based on specifications as to quality. This method has led to a care ful scrutiny of all processes yielding factors which enter into the final settlement. Excerpt from Illinois Coal: Markets and Delivery Systems The study identifies the transportation facilities used to move coal in 1980 and the facilities which are expected to carry coal in 1990. The analysis of the 1980 system was based on actual coal traffic patterns. For Illinois-produced coal, the total study tonnage of 59 million tons for 1980 represents 94 percent of the million tons of coal produced that year. Existing long-term coal contracts between mining companies and utilities were used to project the 1990 coal markets and transportation system that will be needed to reach these markets.
