Le traitement de l'azote au sein des stations d'épuration des eaux usées devient l'un des principaux enjeux actuels du fait de son impact particulièrement néfaste sur le milieu naturel. A l'aval de traitements secondaires à moyenne et forte charge, les gestionnaires peuvent avoir recours à la nitrification tertiaire par biofiltration, procédé intensif s'insérant bien pour les installations à réhabiliter dans les zones à forte pression foncière. Il s'avère être un procédé capable d'éliminer de très fortes charges dans un espace restreint par sa capacité à accumuler une quantité importante de biomasse active autour du matériau filtrant. La simulation du comportement d'un tel procédé n'est pas directe, et peu de travaux ont mené à un outil utilisable en ingénierie. Or, son usage serait indispensable pour valider le dimensionnement en conditions réelles de fonctionnement et en régime dynamique. L'objectif principal de ce travail a porté sur l'étude et la validation d'un modèle de biofiltration déjà existant mais encore jamais testé avec des données réelles de terrain en traitement tertiaire de nitrification. Dans ce but, le fonctionnement d'une installation pilote semi-industrielle alimentée par un effluent urbain réel provenant de bassins par boues activées a été étudiée. Afin de se placer en condition dynamique de fonctionnement, différents paliers de charges moyennes journalières en azote ont été appliqués, au sein desquels des à-coups de charges hydrauliques ont été provoqués. Les résultats acquis en continu pendant plus d'un an, associés à un protocole de calage systématique issu d'une étude de sensibilité, ont permis d'obtenir un jeu de paramètres calé et validé du modèle. Le protocole a nécessité la mise en?uvre de tests spécifiques caractérisant régulièrement le biofilm développé dans le procédé. Ces essais ont augmenté le nombre de variables d'état observées et à comparer avec les prédictions du modèle, ce qui a permis de mieux en évaluer sa robustesse. En parallèle, les tests spécifiques ont permis d'étudier la dynamique des processus impliqués dans l'élimination de l'azote au sein du procédé. Les paramètres influençant les performances globales du traitement de l'azote, l'activité et la quantification de la biomasse autotrophe, son temps de séjour ou encore sa répartition au sein du milieu filtrant ont ainsi pu être évalués. La double démarche expérimentale et numérique a permis de montrer que le modèle de biofiltration est capable de simuler des performances de traitement de l'azote conformes à la réalité. D'autre part, ce travail a permis d'étudier de manière approfondie les mécanismes inclus dans le modèle et leurs limitations face aux différentes conditions de fonctionnement appliquées au système. Des faiblesses du modèle concernant le comportement des composés particulaires et l'évolution de la perte de charge au sein du pilote ont notamment été dégagées.
