Book Description
Excerpt from An Overview of the Prehistoric Resources of the Metropolitan St. Louis Area A second management tool is existing legislation designed to protect cultural resources. Federal laws such as the National Historic Pre servation Act of 1966, the National Environ mental Policy Act, Executive Order 11593 and the Archaeological and Historic Preservation Act clearly establish a national policy of concern and action on behalf of evaluating and preserving cultural, historical, and archaeological resources. The application of these laws to all relevant situations will go far in assuring there is a cultural resource base left to manage. The third management tool is planning. Effective archaeological, resource management can only be accomplished through regional planning efforts. Planning involves initially developing a general overview of the archaeology of a region for identifying important resources and the factors affecting them. Following the overview study, planning efforts should focus on developing an integrated program involving data collection, plan (and alternative plan) form'ula tion, and implementation. This book provides information pertinent to the developments in urban archeology. Organized into nine chapters, this volume begins with an overview of cultural resource management developed to assess the significance of, and to manage the cultural resources on public lands. This text then explores the basic aspects of natural and human-caused changes on the portion of the archaeological resource base consisting of archaeological sites. Other chapters consider the practice of urban archeology in the United States, with emphasis on the relationships between human behavior and material culture in an urban setting. This book discusses as well the applications of computer graphics in archeology. The final chapter deals with the types of skeletal and population changes that accompany malnutrition.
